A Psalm of David, for a memorial. O LORD, rebuke me not in Your wrath, And chasten me not in Your burning anger.1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury!
For Your arrows have sunk deep into me, And Your hand has pressed down on me.2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down.
There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your indignation; There is no health in my bones because of my sin.3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin.
For my iniquities are gone over my head; As a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.
My wounds grow foul and fester Because of my folly.5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins.
I am bent over and greatly bowed down; I go mourning all day long.6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning.
For my loins are filled with burning, And there is no soundness in my flesh.7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick.
I am benumbed and badly crushed; I groan because of the agitation of my heart.8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel.
Lord, all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You.9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you.
My heart throbs, my strength fails me; And the light of my eyes, even that has gone from me.10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see.
My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen stand afar off.11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away.
Those who seek my life lay snares for me; And those who seek to injure me have threatened destruction, And they devise treachery all day long.12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things.
But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; And I am like a mute man who does not open his mouth.13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak.
Yes, I am like a man who does not hear, And in whose mouth are no arguments.14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense.
For I hope in You, O LORD; You will answer, O Lord my God.15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God!
For I said, "May they not rejoice over me, Who, when my foot slips, would magnify themselves against me."16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me.
For I am ready to fall, And my sorrow is continually before me.17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain.
For I confess my iniquity; I am full of anxiety because of my sin.18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins.
But my enemies are vigorous and strong, And many are those who hate me wrongfully.19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me.
And those who repay evil for good, They oppose me, because I follow what is good.20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me.
Do not forsake me, O LORD; O my God, do not be far from me!21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me!
Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer!
