Psalm 42
NASB Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New American Standard Bible 1995New Living Translation
1For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God.1As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.
2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?2I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?
3My tears have been my food day and night, While they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"3Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?”
4These things I remember and I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go along with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God, With the voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.4My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration!
5Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence.5Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and
6O my God, my soul is in despair within me; Therefore I remember You from the land of the Jordan And the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.6my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you— even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar.
7Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.7I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me.
8The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me in the night, A prayer to the God of my life.8But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.
9I will say to God my rock, "Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?"9“O God my rock,” I cry, “why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?”
10As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me, While they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"10Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?”
11Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.11Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!
