"Why are times not appointed by the Almighty? Why do those who know him not see his days? 1“Why does the Almighty not reserve times for judgment? Why may those who know Him never see His days?
Men move boundary stones; they seize the flock and pasture them. 2Men move boundary stones; they pasture stolen flocks.
They drive away the orphan's donkey; they take the widow's ox as a pledge. 3They drive away the donkey of the fatherless and take the widow’s ox in pledge.
They turn the needy from the pathway, and the poor of the land hide themselves together. 4They push the needy off the road and force all the poor of the land into hiding.
Like wild donkeys in the desert they go out to their labor, seeking diligently for food; the wasteland provides food for them and for their children. 5Indeed, like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go to work foraging for food; the wasteland is food for their children.
They reap fodder in the field, and glean in the vineyard of the wicked. 6They gather fodder in the fields and glean the vineyards of the wicked.
They spend the night naked because they lack clothing; they have no covering against the cold. 7Without clothing, they spend the night naked; they have no covering against the cold.
They are soaked by mountain rains and huddle in the rocks because they lack shelter. 8Drenched by mountain rains, they huddle against the rocks for want of shelter.
The fatherless child is snatched from the breast, the infant of the poor is taken as a pledge. 9The fatherless infant is snatched from the breast; the nursing child of the poor is seized for a debt.
They go about naked, without clothing, and go hungry while they carry the sheaves. 10Without clothing, they wander about naked. They carry the sheaves, but still go hungry.
They press out the olive oil between the rows of olive trees; they tread the winepresses while they are thirsty. 11They crush olives within their walls; they tread the winepresses, but go thirsty.
From the city the dying groan, and the wounded cry out for help, but God charges no one with wrongdoing. 12From the city, men groan, and the souls of the wounded cry out, yet God charges no one with wrongdoing.
There are those who rebel against the light; they do not know its ways and they do not stay on its paths. 13Then there are those who rebel against the light, not knowing its ways or staying on its paths.
Before daybreak the murderer rises up; he kills the poor and the needy; in the night he is like a thief. 14When daylight is gone, the murderer rises to kill the poor and needy; in the night he is like a thief.
And the eye of the adulterer watches for the twilight, thinking, 'No eye can see me,' and covers his face with a mask. 15The eye of the adulterer watches for twilight. Thinking, ‘No eye will see me,’ he covers his face.
In the dark the robber breaks into houses, but by day they shut themselves in; they do not know the light. 16In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves in, never to experience the light.
For all of them, the morning is to them like deep darkness; they are friends with the terrors of darkness. 17For to them, deep darkness is their morning; surely they are friends with the terrors of darkness!
"You say, 'He is foam on the face of the waters; their portion of the land is cursed so that no one goes to their vineyard. 18They are but foam on the surface of the water; their portion of the land is cursed, so that no one turns toward their vineyards.
The drought as well as the heat carry away the melted snow; so the grave takes away those who have sinned. 19As drought and heat consume the melting snow, so Sheol steals those who have sinned.
The womb forgets him, the worm feasts on him, no longer will he be remembered. Like a tree, wickedness will be broken down. 20The womb forgets them; the worm feeds on them; they are remembered no more. So injustice is like a broken tree.
He preys on the barren and childless woman, and does not treat the widow well. 21They prey on the barren and childless, and show no kindness to the widow.
But God drags off the mighty by his power; when God rises up against him, he has no faith in his life. 22Yet by His power, God drags away the mighty; though rising up, they have no assurance of life.
God may let them rest in a feeling of security, but he is constantly watching all their ways. 23He gives them a sense of security, but His eyes are on their ways.
They are exalted for a little while, and then they are gone, they are brought low like all others, and gathered in, and like a head of grain they are cut off.' 24They are exalted for a moment, then they are gone; they are brought low and gathered up like all others; they are cut off like heads of grain.
"If this is not so, who can prove me a liar and reduce my words to nothing?" 25If this is not so, then who can prove me a liar and reduce my words to nothing?”
