The heavens and the earth were completed with everything that was in them.1So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed.
By the seventh day God finished the work that he had been doing, and he ceased on the seventh day all the work that he had been doing.2On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.
God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he ceased all the work that he had been doing in creation. 3God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, for on it he rested from all his work of creation.
This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created--when the LORD God made the earth and heavens. 4These are the records of the heavens and the earth, concerning their creation. At the time that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
Now no shrub of the field had yet grown on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.5no shrub of the field had yet grown on the land, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not made it rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground.
Springs would well up from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.6But mist would come up from the earth and water all the ground.
The LORD God formed the man from the soil of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 7Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
The LORD God planted an orchard in the east, in Eden; and there he placed the man he had formed.8The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he placed the man he had formed.
The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow from the soil, every tree that was pleasing to look at and good for food. (Now the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were in the middle of the orchard.) 9The LORD God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Now a river flows from Eden to water the orchard, and from there it divides into four headstreams.10A river went out from Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became the source of four rivers.
The name of the first is Pishon; it runs through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.11The name of the first is Pishon, which flows through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
(The gold of that land is pure; pearls and lapis lazuli are also there).12Gold from that land is pure; bdellium and onyx are also there.
The name of the second river is Gihon; it runs through the entire land of Cush.13The name of the second river is Gihon, which flows through the entire land of Cush.
The name of the third river is Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. 14The name of the third river is Tigris, which runs east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
The LORD God took the man and placed him in the orchard in Eden to care for it and to maintain it.15The LORD God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.
Then the LORD God commanded the man, "You may freely eat fruit from every tree of the orchard,16And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree of the garden,
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die." 17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die."
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion for him who corresponds to him."18Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him."
The LORD God formed out of the ground every living animal of the field and every bird of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them, and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.19The LORD God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
So the man named all the animals, the birds of the air, and the living creatures of the field, but for Adam no companion who corresponded to him was found.20The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him.
So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he was asleep, he took part of the man's side and closed up the place with flesh.21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place.
Then the LORD God made a woman from the part he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.22Then the LORD God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.
Then the man said, "This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." 23And the man said: This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called "woman," for she was taken from man.
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and unites with his wife, and they become a new family.24This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.
The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed. 25Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.
