Finally, pray for us, brothers and sisters, that the Lord's message may spread quickly and be honored as in fact it was among you, | 1Finally, brothers, pray for us that the Lord's message may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you, |
and that we may be delivered from perverse and evil people. For not all have faith. | 2and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not all have faith. |
But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. | 3But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen and guard you from the evil one. |
And we are confident about you in the Lord that you are both doing--and will do--what we are commanding. | 4We have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do what we command. |
Now may the Lord direct your hearts toward the love of God and the endurance of Christ. | 5May the Lord direct your hearts to God's love and Christ's endurance. |
But we command you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who lives an undisciplined life and not according to the tradition they received from us. | 6Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother who walks irresponsibly and not according to the tradition received from us. |
For you know yourselves how you must imitate us, because we did not behave without discipline among you, | 7For you yourselves know how you must imitate us: We were not irresponsible among you; |
and we did not eat anyone's food without paying. Instead, in toil and drudgery we worked night and day in order not to burden any of you. | 8we did not eat anyone's food free of charge; instead, we labored and struggled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you. |
It was not because we do not have that right, but to give ourselves as an example for you to imitate. | 9It is not that we don't have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us. |
For even when we were with you, we used to give you this command: "If anyone is not willing to work, neither should he eat." | 10In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: "If anyone isn't willing to work, he should not eat." |
For we hear that some among you are living an undisciplined life, not doing their own work but meddling in the work of others. | 11For we hear that there are some among you who walk irresponsibly, not working at all, but interfering with the work of others. |
Now such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and so provide their own food to eat. | 12Now we command and exhort such people by the Lord Jesus Christ that quietly working, they may eat their own food. |
But you, brothers and sisters, do not grow weary in doing what is right. | 13Brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. |
But if anyone does not obey our message through this letter, take note of him and do not associate closely with him, so that he may be ashamed. | 14And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person; don't associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. |
Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. | 15Yet don't treat him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. |
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all. | 16May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with all of you. |
I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand, which is how I write in every letter. | 17This greeting is in my own hand--Paul. This is a sign in every letter; this is how I write. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. | 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. |
