For the music director; by David. Fools say to themselves, "There is no God." They sin and commit evil deeds; none of them does what is right. | 1Fools say to themselves, "There is no God." They are corrupt and commit evil deeds; not one of them practices what is good. |
The LORD looks down from heaven at the human race, to see if there is anyone who is wise and seeks God. | 2The LORD looks down from the heavens upon humanity to see if anyone shows discernment as he searches for God. |
Everyone rejects God; they are all morally corrupt. None of them does what is right, not even one! | 3All have turned away, together they have become corrupt; no one practices what is good, not even one. |
All those who behave wickedly do not understand--those who devour my people as if they were eating bread, and do not call out to the LORD. | 4Will those who do evil ever learn? They devour my people like they devour bread, and never call on the LORD. |
They are absolutely terrified, for God defends the godly. | 5There they are seized with terror, because God is with those who are righteous. |
You want to humiliate the oppressed, even though the LORD is their shelter. | 6You would frustrate the plans of the oppressed, but the LORD is their refuge. |
I wish the deliverance of Israel would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the well-being of his people, may Jacob rejoice, may Israel be happy! | 7May Israel's deliverance come from Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice, and Israel will be glad. |
