For the music director; by David. Fools say to themselves, "There is no God." They sin and commit evil deeds; none of them does what is right. | 1For the director of music. Of David. The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. |
The LORD looks down from heaven at the human race, to see if there is anyone who is wise and seeks God. | 2The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. |
Everyone rejects God; they are all morally corrupt. None of them does what is right, not even one! | 3All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. |
All those who behave wickedly do not understand--those who devour my people as if they were eating bread, and do not call out to the LORD. | 4Do all these evildoers know nothing? They devour my people as though eating bread; they never call on the LORD. |
They are absolutely terrified, for God defends the godly. | 5But there they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of the righteous. |
You want to humiliate the oppressed, even though the LORD is their shelter. | 6You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge. |
I wish the deliverance of Israel would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the well-being of his people, may Jacob rejoice, may Israel be happy! | 7Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad! |
