For the music director; according to the tune "Morning Doe;" a psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I groan in prayer, but help seems far away. | 1To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? |
My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up. | 2O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. |
You are holy; you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel. | 3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. |
In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted in you and you rescued them. | 4Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. |
To you they cried out, and they were saved; in you they trusted and they were not disappointed. | 5They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. |
But I am a worm, not a man; people insult me and despise me. | 6But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. |
All who see me taunt me; they mock me and shake their heads. | 7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, |
They say, "Commit yourself to the LORD! Let the LORD rescue him! Let the LORD deliver him, for he delights in him." | 8He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. |
Yes, you are the one who brought me out from the womb and made me feel secure on my mother's breasts. | 9But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. |
I have been dependent on you since birth; from the time I came out of my mother's womb you have been my God. | 10I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. |
Do not remain far away from me, for trouble is near and I have no one to help me. | 11Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. |
Many bulls surround me; powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in. | 12Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. |
They open their mouths to devour me like a roaring lion that rips its prey. | 13They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. |
My strength drains away like water; all my bones are dislocated; my heart is like wax; it melts away inside me. | 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. |
The roof of my mouth is as dry as a piece of pottery; my tongue sticks to my gums. You set me in the dust of death. | 15My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. |
Yes, wild dogs surround me--a gang of evil men crowd around me; like a lion they pin my hands and feet. | 16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. |
I can count all my bones; my enemies are gloating over me in triumph. | 17I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. |
They are dividing up my clothes among themselves; they are rolling dice for my garments. | 18They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. |
But you, O LORD, do not remain far away! You are my source of strength! Hurry and help me! | 19But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. |
Deliver me from the sword! Save my life from the claws of the wild dogs! | 20Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. |
Rescue me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered me! | 21Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. |
I will declare your name to my countrymen! In the middle of the assembly I will praise you! | 22I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. |
You loyal followers of the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him! | 23Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. |
For he did not despise or detest the suffering of the oppressed; he did not ignore him; when he cried out to him, he responded. | 24For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. |
You are the reason I offer praise in the great assembly; I will fulfill my promises before the LORD's loyal followers. | 25My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. |
Let the oppressed eat and be filled! Let those who seek his help praise the LORD! May you live forever! | 26The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. |
Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the LORD and turn to him! Let all the nations worship you! | 27All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. |
For the LORD is king and rules over the nations. | 28For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. |
All of the thriving people of the earth will join the celebration and worship; all those who are descending into the grave will bow before him, including those who cannot preserve their lives. | 29All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. |
A whole generation will serve him; they will tell the next generation about the sovereign Lord. | 30A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. |
They will come and tell about his saving deeds; they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished. | 31They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this. |
