A song, a psalm by the Korahites. The LORD is great and certainly worthy of praise in the city of our God, his holy hill. 1A Song and Psalm for the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.
It is lofty and pleasing to look at, a source of joy to the whole earth. Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon; it is the city of the great king. 2Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
God is in its fortresses; he reveals himself as its defender. 3God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
For look, the kings assemble; they advance together. 4For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.
As soon as they see, they are shocked; they are terrified, they quickly retreat. 5They saw it, and so they marvelled; they were troubled, and hasted away.
Look at them shake uncontrollably, like a woman writhing in childbirth. 6Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.
With an east wind you shatter the large ships. 7Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
We heard about God's mighty deeds, now we have seen them, in the city of the LORD, the invincible Warrior, in the city of our God. God makes it permanently secure. (Selah) 8As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah.
We reflect on your loyal love, O God, within your temple. 9We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
The praise you receive as far away as the ends of the earth is worthy of your reputation, O God. You execute justice! 10According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness.
Mount Zion rejoices; the towns of Judah are happy, because of your acts of judgment. 11Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.
Walk around Zion! Encircle it! Count its towers! 12Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof.
Consider its defenses! Walk through its fortresses, so you can tell the next generation about it! 13Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following.
For God, our God, is our defender forever! He guides us! 14For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
