| 1Then Joseph hugged his father's face. He wept over him and kissed him. | 1Then Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him and kissed him. |
| 2Joseph instructed the physicians in his service to embalm his father, so the physicians embalmed Israel. | 2Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. |
| 3They took forty days, for that is the full time needed for embalming. The Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. | 3Now forty days were required for it, for such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days. |
| 4When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh's royal court, "If I have found favor in your sight, please say to Pharaoh, | 4When the days of mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying, |
| 5My father made me swear an oath. He said, "I am about to die. Bury me in my tomb that I dug for myself there in the land of Canaan." Now let me go and bury my father; then I will return.'" | 5'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.'" |
| 6So Pharaoh said, "Go and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do." | 6Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear." |
| 7So Joseph went up to bury his father; all Pharaoh's officials went with him--the senior courtiers of his household, all the senior officials of the land of Egypt, | 7So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, |
| 8all Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household. But they left their little children and their flocks and herds in the land of Goshen. | 8and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father's household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. |
| 9Chariots and horsemen also went up with him, so it was a very large entourage. | 9There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company. |
| 10When they came to the threshing floor of Atad on the other side of the Jordan, they mourned there with very great and bitter sorrow. There Joseph observed a seven day period of mourning for his father. | 10When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he observed seven days mourning for his father. |
| 11When the Canaanites who lived in the land saw them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a very sad occasion for the Egyptians." That is why its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. | 11Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians." Therefore it was named Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. |
| 12So the sons of Jacob did for him just as he had instructed them. | 12Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them; |
| 13His sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, near Mamre. This is the field Abraham purchased as a burial plot from Ephron the Hittite. | 13for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a burial site from Ephron the Hittite. |
| 14After he buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, along with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to bury his father. | 14After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father. |
| 15When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph bears a grudge and wants to repay us in full for all the harm we did to him?" | 15When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!" |
| 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave these instructions before he died: | 16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father charged before he died, saying, |
| 17Tell Joseph this: Please forgive the sin of your brothers and the wrong they did when they treated you so badly.' Now please forgive the sin of the servants of the God of your father." When this message was reported to him, Joseph wept. | 17'Thus you shall say to Joseph, "Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong."' And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. |
| 18Then his brothers also came and threw themselves down before him; they said, "Here we are; we are your slaves." | 18Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants." |
| 19But Joseph answered them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? | 19But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place? |
| 20As for you, you meant to harm me, but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day. | 20"As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. |
| 21So now, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your little children." Then he consoled them and spoke kindly to them. | 21"So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. |
| 22Joseph lived in Egypt, along with his father's family. Joseph lived 110 years. | 22Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father's household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. |
| 23Joseph saw the descendants of Ephraim to the third generation. He also saw the children of Makir the son of Manasseh; they were given special inheritance rights by Joseph. | 23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph's knees. |
| 24Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely come to you and lead you up from this land to the land he swore on oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." | 24Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob." |
| 25Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He said, "God will surely come to you. Then you must carry my bones up from this place." | 25Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, "God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here." |
| 26So Joseph died at the age of 110. After they embalmed him, his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt. | 26So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt. |
