NET Bible | New International Version |
After Solomon finished building the LORD's temple, the royal palace, and all the other construction projects he had planned, | 1When Solomon had finished building the temple of the LORD and the royal palace, and had achieved all he had desired to do, |
the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, in the same way he had appeared to him at Gibeon. | 2the LORD appeared to him a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. |
The LORD said to him, "I have answered your prayer and your request for help that you made to me. I have consecrated this temple you built by making it my permanent home; I will be constantly present there. | 3The LORD said to him: "I have heard the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. |
You must serve me with integrity and sincerity, just as your father David did. Do everything I commanded and obey my rules and regulations. | 4"As for you, if you walk before me faithfully with integrity of heart and uprightness, as David your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws, |
Then I will allow your dynasty to rule over Israel permanently, just as I promised your father David, 'You will not fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.' | 5I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father when I said, 'You shall never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.' |
"But if you or your sons ever turn away from me, fail to obey the regulations and rules I instructed you to keep, and decide to serve and worship other gods, | 6"But if you or your descendants turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them, |
then I will remove Israel from the land I have given them, I will abandon this temple I have consecrated with my presence, and Israel will be mocked and ridiculed among all the nations. | 7then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples. |
This temple will become a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be shocked and will hiss out their scorn, saying, 'Why did the LORD do this to this land and this temple?' | 8This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say, 'Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this temple?' |
Others will then answer, 'Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who led their ancestors out of Egypt. They embraced other gods whom they worshiped and served. That is why the LORD has brought all this disaster down on them.'" | 9People will answer, 'Because they have forsaken the LORD their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them--that is why the LORD brought all this disaster on them.'" |
After twenty years, during which Solomon built the LORD's temple and the royal palace, | 10At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built these two buildings--the temple of the LORD and the royal palace-- |
King Solomon gave King Hiram of Tyre twenty cities in the region of Galilee, because Hiram had supplied Solomon with cedars, evergreens, and all the gold he wanted. | 11King Solomon gave twenty towns in Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, because Hiram had supplied him with all the cedar and juniper and gold he wanted. |
When Hiram went out from Tyre to inspect the cities Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. | 12But when Hiram went from Tyre to see the towns that Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. |
Hiram asked, "Why did you give me these cities, my friend?" He called that area the region of Cabul, a name which it has retained to this day. | 13"What kind of towns are these you have given me, my brother?" he asked. And he called them the Land of Kabul, a name they have to this day. |
Hiram had sent to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold. | 14Now Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents of gold. |
Here are the details concerning the work crews King Solomon conscripted to build the LORD's temple, his palace, the terrace, the wall of Jerusalem, and the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. | 15Here is the account of the forced labor King Solomon conscripted to build the LORD's temple, his own palace, the terraces, the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer. |
(Pharaoh, king of Egypt, had attacked and captured Gezer. He burned it and killed the Canaanites who lived in the city. He gave it as a wedding present to his daughter, who had married Solomon.) | 16(Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter, Solomon's wife. |
Solomon built up Gezer, lower Beth Horon, | 17And Solomon rebuilt Gezer.) He built up Lower Beth Horon, |
Baalath, Tadmor in the wilderness, | 18Baalath, and Tadmor in the desert, within his land, |
all the storage cities that belonged to him, and the cities where chariots and horses were kept. He built whatever he wanted in Jerusalem, Lebanon, and throughout his entire kingdom. | 19as well as all his store cities and the towns for his chariots and for his horses --whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled. |
Now several non-Israelite peoples were left in the land after the conquest of Joshua, including the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. | 20There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites (these peoples were not Israelites). |
Their descendants remained in the land (the Israelites were unable to wipe them out completely). Solomon conscripted them for his work crews, and they continue in that role to this very day. | 21Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these peoples remaining in the land--whom the Israelites could not exterminate --to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day. |
Solomon did not assign Israelites to these work crews; the Israelites served as his soldiers, attendants, officers, charioteers, and commanders of his chariot forces. | 22But Solomon did not make slaves of any of the Israelites; they were his fighting men, his government officials, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and charioteers. |
These men were also in charge of Solomon's work projects; there were a total of 550 men who supervised the workers. | 23They were also the chief officials in charge of Solomon's projects--550 officials supervising those who did the work. |
Solomon built the terrace as soon as Pharaoh's daughter moved up from the city of David to the palace Solomon built for her. | 24After Pharaoh's daughter had come up from the City of David to the palace Solomon had built for her, he constructed the terraces. |
Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense along with them before the LORD. He made the temple his official worship place. | 25Three times a year Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense before the LORD along with them, and so fulfilled the temple obligations. |
King Solomon also built ships in Ezion Geber, which is located near Elat in the land of Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. | 26King Solomon also built ships at Ezion Geber, which is near Elath in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. |
Hiram sent his fleet and some of his sailors, who were well acquainted with the sea, to serve with Solomon's men. | 27And Hiram sent his men--sailors who knew the sea--to serve in the fleet with Solomon's men. |
They sailed to Ophir, took from there four hundred twenty talents of gold, and then brought them to King Solomon. | 28They sailed to Ophir and brought back 420 talents of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon. |
