Proverbs 28
NET Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew International Version
The wicked person flees when there is no one pursuing, but the righteous person is as confident as a lion. 1The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
When a country is rebellious it has many princes, but by someone who is discerning and knowledgeable order is maintained. 2When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.
A poor person who oppresses the weak is like a driving rain without food. 3A ruler who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain that leaves no crops.
Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law contend with them. 4Those who forsake instruction praise the wicked, but those who heed it resist them.
Evil people do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it all. 5Evildoers do not understand what is right, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully.
A poor person who walks in his integrity is better than one who is perverse in his ways even though he is rich. 6Better the poor whose walk is blameless than the rich whose ways are perverse.
The one who keeps the law is a discerning child, but a companion of gluttons brings shame to his parents. 7A discerning son heeds instruction, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.
The one who increases his wealth by increasing interest gathers it for someone who is gracious to the needy. 8Whoever increases wealth by taking interest or profit from the poor amasses it for another, who will be kind to the poor.
The one who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination. 9If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.
The one who leads the upright astray in an evil way will himself fall into his own pit, but the blameless will inherit what is good. 10Whoever leads the upright along an evil path will fall into their own trap, but the blameless will receive a good inheritance.
A rich person is wise in his own eyes, but a discerning poor person can evaluate him properly. 11The rich are wise in their own eyes; one who is poor and discerning sees how deluded they are.
When the righteous rejoice, great is the glory, but when the wicked rise to power, people are sought out. 12When the righteous triumph, there is great elation; but when the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding.
The one who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but whoever confesses them and forsakes them will find mercy. 13Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Blessed is the one who is always cautious, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into evil. 14Blessed is the one who always trembles before God, but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble.
Like a roaring lion or a roving bear, so is a wicked ruler over a poor people. 15Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless people.
The prince who is a great oppressor lacks wisdom, but the one who hates unjust gain will prolong his days. 16A tyrannical ruler practices extortion, but one who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long reign.
The one who is tormented by the murder of another will flee to the pit; let no one support him. 17Anyone tormented by the guilt of murder will seek refuge in the grave; let no one hold them back.
The one who walks blamelessly will be delivered, but whoever is perverse in his ways will fall at once. 18The one whose walk is blameless is kept safe, but the one whose ways are perverse will fall into the pit.
The one who works his land will be satisfied with food, but whoever chases daydreams will have his fill of poverty. 19Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.
A faithful person will have an abundance of blessings, but the one who hastens to gain riches will not go unpunished. 20A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
To show partiality is terrible, for a person will transgress over the smallest piece of bread. 21To show partiality is not good-- yet a person will do wrong for a piece of bread.
The stingy person hastens after riches and does not know that poverty will overtake him. 22The stingy are eager to get rich and are unaware that poverty awaits them.
The one who reproves another will in the end find more favor than the one who flatters with the tongue. 23Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor rather than one who has a flattering tongue.
The one who robs his father and mother and says, "There is no transgression," is a companion to the one who destroys. 24Whoever robs their father or mother and says, "It's not wrong," is partner to one who destroys.
The greedy person stirs up dissension, but the one who trusts in the LORD will prosper. 25The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the LORD will prosper.
The one who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but the one who walks in wisdom will escape. 26Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.
The one who gives to the poor will not lack, but whoever shuts his eyes to them will receive many curses. 27Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.
When the wicked gain control, people hide themselves, but when they perish, the righteous increase. 28When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive.
