| 1For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; a prayer of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me. | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack. |
| 2Those who anticipate my defeat attack me all day long. Indeed, many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. | 2My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me. |
| 3When I am afraid, I trust in you. | 3When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. |
| 4In God--I boast in his promise--in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? | 4In God, whose word I praise-- in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? |
| 5All day long they cause me trouble; they make a habit of plotting my demise. | 5All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin. |
