For You have delivered my soul from death
This phrase acknowledges God's power and faithfulness in delivering the psalmist from mortal danger. In the context of David's life, it reflects his numerous escapes from King Saul's attempts on his life (1 Samuel 19-24). Theologically, it underscores God's sovereignty and protection over His chosen ones. This deliverance can also be seen as a type of Christ's resurrection, where Jesus was delivered from death, providing eternal life for believers (1 Corinthians 15:20-22).

and my feet from stumbling
This part of the verse highlights God's guidance and support in preventing the psalmist from falling into sin or danger. In biblical times, walking was a common metaphor for living one's life. The imagery of feet not stumbling suggests a life lived in accordance with God's will, supported by His strength (Psalm 37:23-24). It also connects to the New Testament, where believers are encouraged to walk in the Spirit to avoid fulfilling the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).

that I may walk before God
Walking before God implies living a life of integrity and obedience in His presence. This phrase reflects the covenant relationship between God and His people, where they are called to live righteously (Genesis 17:1). It also suggests a life of continual fellowship and accountability to God, reminiscent of Enoch, who "walked with God" and was taken up to heaven (Genesis 5:24).

in the light of life
The "light of life" symbolizes divine guidance, truth, and salvation. In the cultural context of ancient Israel, light was often associated with God's presence and favor (Psalm 27:1). This phrase prophetically points to Jesus Christ, who declared Himself the "light of the world" and promised that whoever follows Him will have the light of life (John 8:12). It emphasizes the transformative power of living in God's truth and the eternal life offered through Christ.

Persons / Places / Events
1. David
The author of this psalm, David often wrote during times of distress and persecution, particularly when he was pursued by King Saul or enemies like the Philistines.

2. God
The central figure in the psalm, God is portrayed as the deliverer and protector of David's soul.

3. Philistines
While not directly mentioned in this verse, the context of Psalm 56 is David's capture by the Philistines in Gath, which is a backdrop to his plea for deliverance.
Teaching Points
Deliverance and Gratitude
Recognize and give thanks for God's deliverance in our lives, both physically and spiritually. Reflect on how God has saved us from various forms of "death" or danger.

Walking in the Light
Strive to live a life that reflects God's light, making choices that align with His will and truth. This involves daily commitment to spiritual disciplines and moral integrity.

Avoiding Stumbling
Seek God's guidance to prevent spiritual stumbling. This includes prayer, studying Scripture, and being part of a faith community that encourages accountability and growth.

Living with Purpose
Understand that our deliverance is not just for our benefit but to enable us to walk before God and fulfill His purposes. Consider how your life can be a testimony to God's saving grace.(13) Wilt thou not deliver?--Better, hast thou not delivered?

From falling.--Literally, front a thrust.

Verse 13. - For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling; rather, hast thou not delivered (Revised Version); or, surely thou hast delivered (Professor Cheyne). The psalmist views his entire deliverance as accomplished; nothing remains to be asked for. That I may walk before God in the light of the living; i.e. that henceforth I may be free from trouble, and walk before God in the clear daylight, no longer dwelling in darkness, but in "the light of life" (comp. Job 33:30; John 8:12).
