1For Solomon. O God, grant the king the ability to make just decisions! Grant the king's son the ability to make fair decisions! | 1Of Solomon. Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. |
2Then he will judge your people fairly, and your oppressed ones equitably. | 2May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. |
3The mountains will bring news of peace to the people, and the hills will announce justice. | 3May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. |
4He will defend the oppressed among the people; he will deliver the children of the poor and crush the oppressor. | 4May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor. |
5People will fear you as long as the sun and moon remain in the sky, for generation after generation. | 5May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. |
6He will descend like rain on the mown grass, like showers that drench the earth. | 6May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. |
7During his days the godly will flourish; peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky. | 7In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more. |
8May he rule from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth! | 8May he rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. |
9Before him the coastlands will bow down, and his enemies will lick the dust. | 9May the desert tribes bow before him and his enemies lick the dust. |
10The kings of Tarshish and the coastlands will offer gifts; the kings of Sheba and Seba will bring tribute. | 10May the kings of Tarshish and of distant shores bring tribute to him. May the kings of Sheba and Seba present him gifts. |
11All kings will bow down to him; all nations will serve him. | 11May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him. |
12For he will rescue the needy when they cry out for help, and the oppressed who have no defender. | 12For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. |
13He will take pity on the poor and needy; the lives of the needy he will save. | 13He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. |
14From harm and violence he will defend them; he will value their lives. | 14He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight. |
15May he live! May they offer him gold from Sheba! May they continually pray for him! May they pronounce blessings on him all day long! | 15Long may he live! May gold from Sheba be given him. May people ever pray for him and bless him all day long. |
16May there be an abundance of grain in the earth; on the tops of the mountains may it sway! May its fruit trees flourish like the forests of Lebanon! May its crops be as abundant as the grass of the earth! | 16May grain abound throughout the land; on the tops of the hills may it sway. May the crops flourish like Lebanon and thrive like the grass of the field. |
17May his fame endure! May his dynasty last as long as the sun remains in the sky! May they use his name when they formulate their blessings! May all nations consider him to be favored by God! | 17May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. Then all nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed. |
18The LORD God, the God of Israel, deserves praise! He alone accomplishes amazing things! | 18Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. |
19His glorious name deserves praise forevermore! May his majestic splendor fill the whole earth! We agree! We agree! | 19Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen. |
