NET BibleNew Living Translation
You must love the LORD your God and do what he requires; keep his statutes, ordinances, and commandments at all times.1“You must love the LORD your God and always obey his requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands.
Bear in mind today that I am not speaking to your children who have not personally experienced the judgments of the LORD your God, which revealed his greatness, strength, and power.2Keep in mind that I am not talking now to your children, who have never experienced the discipline of the LORD your God or seen his greatness and his strong hand and powerful arm.
They did not see the awesome deeds he performed in the midst of Egypt against Pharaoh king of Egypt and his whole land,3They didn’t see the miraculous signs and wonders he performed in Egypt against Pharaoh and all his land.
or what he did to the army of Egypt, including their horses and chariots, when he made the waters of the Red Sea overwhelm them while they were pursuing you and he annihilated them.4They didn’t see what the LORD did to the armies of Egypt and to their horses and chariots—how he drowned them in the Red Sea as they were chasing you. He destroyed them, and they have not recovered to this very day!
They did not see what he did to you in the desert before you reached this place,5“Your children didn’t see how the LORD cared for you in the wilderness until you arrived here.
or what he did to Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when the earth opened its mouth in the middle of the Israelite camp and swallowed them, their families, their tents, and all the property they brought with them.6They didn’t see what he did to Dathan and Abiram (the sons of Eliab, a descendant of Reuben) when the earth opened its mouth in the Israelite camp and swallowed them, along with their households and tents and every living thing that belonged to them.
I am speaking to you because you are the ones who saw all the great deeds of the LORD! 7But you have seen the LORD perform all these mighty deeds with your own eyes! The Blessings of Obedience
Now pay attention to all the commandments I am giving you today, so that you may be strong enough to enter and possess the land where you are headed,8“Therefore, be careful to obey every command I am giving you today, so you may have strength to go in and take over the land you are about to enter.
and that you may enjoy long life in the land the LORD promised to give to your ancestors and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.9If you obey, you will enjoy a long life in the land the LORD swore to give to your ancestors and to you, their descendants—a land flowing with milk and honey!
For the land where you are headed is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, a land where you planted seed and which you irrigated by hand like a vegetable garden.10For the land you are about to enter and take over is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, where you planted your seed and made irrigation ditches with your foot as in a vegetable garden.
Instead, the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy is one of hills and valleys, a land that drinks in water from the rains,11Rather, the land you will soon take over is a land of hills and valleys with plenty of rain—
a land the LORD your God looks after. He is constantly attentive to it from the beginning to the end of the year.12a land that the LORD your God cares for. He watches over it through each season of the year!
Now, if you pay close attention to my commandments that I am giving you today and love the LORD your God and serve him with all your mind and being,13“If you carefully obey the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the LORD your God and serve him with all your heart and soul,
then he promises, "I will send rain for your land in its season, the autumn and the spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine, and olive oil.14then he will send the rains in their proper seasons—the early and late rains—so you can bring in your harvests of grain, new wine, and olive oil.
I will provide pasture for your livestock and you will eat your fill." 15He will give you lush pastureland for your livestock, and you yourselves will have all you want to eat.
Make sure you do not turn away to serve and worship other gods!16“But be careful. Don’t let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the LORD and serve and worship other gods.
Then the anger of the LORD will erupt against you and he will close up the sky so that it does not rain. The land will not yield its produce, and you will soon be removed from the good land that the Lord is about to give you.17If you do, the LORD’s anger will burn against you. He will shut up the sky and hold back the rain, and the ground will fail to produce its harvests. Then you will quickly die in that good land the LORD is giving you.
Fix these words of mine into your mind and being, and tie them as a reminder on your hands and let them be symbols on your forehead.18“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.
Teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.19Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.
Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates20Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,
so that your days and those of your descendants may be extended in the land which the LORD promised to give to your ancestors, like the days of heaven itself.21so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors.
For if you carefully observe all of these commandments I am giving you and love the LORD your God, live according to his standards, and remain loyal to him,22“Be careful to obey all these commands I am giving you. Show love to the LORD your God by walking in his ways and holding tightly to him.
then he will drive out all these nations ahead of you, and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you.23Then the LORD will drive out all the nations ahead of you, though they are much greater and stronger than you, and you will take over their land.
Every place you set your foot will be yours; your border will extend from the desert to Lebanon and from the River (that is, the Euphrates) as far as the Mediterranean Sea.24Wherever you set foot, that land will be yours. Your frontiers will stretch from the wilderness in the south to Lebanon in the north, and from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
Nobody will be able to resist you; the LORD your God will spread the fear and terror of you over the whole land on which you walk, just as he promised you. 25No one will be able to stand against you, for the LORD your God will cause the people to fear and dread you, as he promised, wherever you go in the whole land.
Take note--I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse:26“Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse!
the blessing if you take to heart the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you today,27You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today.
and the curse if you pay no attention to his commandments and turn from the way I am setting before you today to pursue other gods you have not known.28But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the LORD your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.
When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are to possess, you must pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.29“When the LORD your God brings you into the land and helps you take possession of it, you must pronounce the blessing at Mount Gerizim and the curse at Mount Ebal.
Are they not across the Jordan River, toward the west, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite Gilgal near the oak of Moreh?30(These two mountains are west of the Jordan River in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Jordan Valley, near the town of Gilgal, not far from the oaks of Moreh.)
For you are about to cross the Jordan to possess the land the LORD your God is giving you, and you will possess and inhabit it.31For you are about to cross the Jordan River to take over the land the LORD your God is giving you. When you take that land and are living in it,
Be certain to keep all the statutes and ordinances that I am presenting to you today. 32you must be careful to obey all the decrees and regulations I am giving you today.
