New International Version | Christian Standard Bible |
Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. | 1For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. | 2He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also clothed with weakness. |
This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. | 3Because of this, he must make an offering for his own sins as well as for the people. |
And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. | 4No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was. |
In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father." | 5In the same way, Christ did not exalt himself to become a high priest, but God who said to him, You are my Son; today I have become your Father, |
And he says in another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." | 6also says in another place, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. |
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. | 7During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. |
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered | 8Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. |
and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him | 9After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, |
and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. | 10and he was declared by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. |
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. | 11We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand. |
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! | 12Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God's revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. |
Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. | 13Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. |
But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. | 14But solid food is for the mature--for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil. |
