For the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack. | 1Be gracious to me, God, for a man is trampling me; he fights and oppresses me all day long. |
My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me. | 2My adversaries trample me all day, for many arrogantly fight against me. |
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. | 3When I am afraid, I will trust in you. |
In God, whose word I praise-- in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? | 4In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? |
All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin. | 5They twist my words all day long; all their thoughts against me are evil. |
They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life. | 6They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps while they wait to take my life. |
Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down. | 7Will they escape in spite of such sin? God, bring down the nations in wrath. |
Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll -- are they not in your record? | 8You yourself have recorded my wanderings. Put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? |
Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me. | 9Then my enemies will retreat on the day when I call. This I know: God is for me. |
In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise-- | 10In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise, |
in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me? | 11in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere humans do to me? |
I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you. | 12I am obligated by vows to you, God; I will make my thank offerings to you. |
For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. | 13For you rescued me from death, even my feet from stumbling, to walk before God in the light of life. |
