New International Version | English Standard Version |
Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. | 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. |
You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. | 2You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. |
Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. | 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. |
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. | 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; |
There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. | 5and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; |
There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. | 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. |
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. | 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. |
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, | 8For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, |
to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, | 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, |
to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. | 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. |
All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. | 11All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. |
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. | 12For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. |
For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body--whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. | 13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. |
Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. | 14For the body does not consist of one member but of many. |
Now if the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. | 15If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. |
And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. | 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. |
If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? | 17If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? |
But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. | 18But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. |
If they were all one part, where would the body be? | 19If all were a single member, where would the body be? |
As it is, there are many parts, but one body. | 20As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. |
The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" | 21The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” |
On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, | 22On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, |
and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, | 23and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, |
while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, | 24which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, |
so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. | 25that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. |
If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. | 26If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. |
Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. | 27Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. |
And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. | 28And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. |
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? | 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? |
Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? | 30Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? |
Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way. | 31But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. |
