| 18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. | 18This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. |
| 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. | 19Joseph, her fiance, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. |
| 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. | 20As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. |
| 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." | 21And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." |
| 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: | 22All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord's message through his prophet: |
| 23"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). | 23"Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means 'God is with us.'" |
| 24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. |
| 25But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. | 25But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. |
