And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ. | 16and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Christ. |
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations. | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Christ, fourteen generations. |
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. | 18The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit. |
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. | 19So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. |
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” | 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: | 22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: |
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” | 23See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated "God is with us." |
Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord's angel had commanded him. He married her |
and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. | 25but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus. |
