In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, | 1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:" |
“Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.” ’ ” | 2The LORD of Hosts says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt." |
Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, | 3The word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet: " |
“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?” | 4Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?" |
Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways! | 5Now, the LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways: |
“You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.” | 6You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to become drunk. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it." |
Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways! | 7The LORD of Hosts says this: "Think carefully about your ways. |
Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the LORD. | 8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified," says the LORD." |
“You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the LORD of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. | 9You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined it. Why?" This is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. "Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house. |
Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. | 10So on your account, the skies have withheld the dew and the land its crops. |
For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.” | 11I have summoned a drought on the fields and the hills, on the grain, new wine, olive oil, and whatever the ground yields, on man and beast, and on all that your hands produce." |
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD. |
Then Haggai, the LORD’s messenger, spoke the LORD’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you, says the LORD.” | 13Haggai, the LORD's messenger, delivered the LORD's message to the people, "I am with you"--this is the LORD's declaration. |
So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, | 14The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of Yahweh of Hosts, their God, |
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius. | 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius. |
