New King James Version | International Standard Version |
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: | 1You must realize, however, that in the last days difficult times will come. |
For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, | 2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, |
unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, | 3unfeeling, uncooperative, slanderous, degenerate, brutal, hateful of what is good, |
traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, | 4traitors, reckless, conceited, and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. |
having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! | 5They will hold to an outward form of godliness but deny its power. Stay away from such people. |
For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, | 6For some of these men go into homes and deceive foolish women who are burdened with sins and swayed by all kinds of desires. |
always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. | 7These women are always studying but are never able to arrive at a full knowledge of the truth. |
Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; | 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men oppose the truth. They are depraved in mind and their faith is a counterfeit. |
but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was. | 9But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those two men, their stupidity will be plain to everyone. |
But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, | 10But you have observed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance, |
persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. | 11and how I was persecuted and suffered in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. |
Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. | 12Indeed, all who want to live a godly life in union with the Messiah Jesus will be persecuted. |
But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. | 13But evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse as they deceive others and are themselves deceived. |
But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, | 14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and found to be true, because you know from whom you learned it. |
and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. | 15From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to give you the wisdom you need for salvation through faith in the Messiah Jesus. |
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, | 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, |
that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. | 17so that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good action. |
