There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,1Now in Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.
a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always.2He was a devout man who feared God, as did everyone in his home. He gave many gifts to the poor among the people and always prayed to God.
About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!”3One day, about three in the afternoon, he had a vision and clearly saw an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, "Cornelius!"
And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.4He stared at the angel in terror and asked, "What is it, Lord?" The angel answered him, "Your prayers and your gifts to the poor have arisen as a reminder to God.
Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter.5Send men now to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter.
He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.”6He is a guest of Simon, a leatherworker, whose house is by the sea."
And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually.7When the angel who had spoken to him had gone, Cornelius summoned two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of those who served him regularly.
So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa.8He explained everything to them and sent them to Joppa.
The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.9Around noon the next day, while they were on their way and coming close to the town, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance10He became very hungry and wanted to eat, and while the food was being prepared, he fell into a trance
and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth.11and saw heaven open and something like a large linen sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the ground.
In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.12In it were all kinds of four-footed animals, reptiles, and birds of the air.
And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter! Kill something and eat it."
But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”14But Peter said, "Absolutely not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean!"
And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.”15Again the voice came to him a second time, "You must stop calling unclean what God has made clean."
This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.16This happened three times. Then the sheet was quickly taken back into heaven.
Now while Peter wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate.17While Peter was still at a loss to know what the vision he had seen could mean, the men sent by Cornelius asked for Simon's house and went to the gate.
And they called and asked whether Simon, whose surname was Peter, was lodging there.18They called out and asked if Simon who was called Peter was staying there.
While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are seeking you.19Peter was still thinking about the vision when the Spirit told him, "Look! Three men are looking for you.
Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.”20Get up, go downstairs, and don't hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them."
Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, “Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?”21So Peter went to the men and said, "I'm the man you're looking for. Why are you here?"
And they said, “Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.”22The men replied, "Cornelius, a centurion and an upright and God-fearing man who is respected by the whole Jewish nation, was instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his home to hear what you have to say."
Then he invited them in and lodged them. On the next day Peter went away with them, and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him.23So Peter welcomed them as his guests. The next day, he got up and went with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along with him.
And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends.24The next day, they arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called his relatives and close friends together.
As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him.25When Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him, bowed down at his feet, and began to worship him.
But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man.”26But Peter made him get up, saying, "Stand up! I, too, am only a man."
And as he talked with him, he went in and found many who had come together.27As Peter talked with him, he went in and found that many people had gathered.
Then he said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.28He told them, "You understand how wrong it is for a Jew to associate or visit with unbelievers. But God has shown me that I should stop calling anyone common or unclean,
Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?”29and that is why I didn't hesitate when I was sent for. Now may I ask why you sent for me?"
So Cornelius said, “Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,30Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this very hour, three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my home. All at once a man in radiant clothes stood in front of me
and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are remembered in the sight of God.31and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard. God has remembered your gifts to the poor,
Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. When he comes, he will speak to you.’32so send messengers to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter, to come to you. He is a guest in the home of Simon, a leatherworker, by the sea.'
So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.”33So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. All of us are here now in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has ordered you to say."
Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.34Then Peter began to speak: "Now I understand that God shows no partiality.
But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.35Indeed, whoever fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him in any nation.
The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—36He has sent his word to the descendants of Israel and brought them the good news of peace through Jesus the Messiah. This man is the Lord of everyone.
that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:37You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached.
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.38God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, he went around doing good and healing everyone who was oppressed by the devil.
And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree.39We are witnesses of everything Jesus did in the land of the Jews, including Jerusalem. "They hung him on a tree and killed him,
Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly,40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear—
not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.41not to all the people, but to us who were chosen by God to be witnesses and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead.42He also ordered us to preach to the people and to testify solemnly that this is the one appointed by God to be the judge of the living and the dead.
To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.”43All the prophets testify to this: everyone who believes in Jesus receives forgiveness of sins through his name."
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word.44While Peter was still making this statement, the Holy Spirit fell on all the people who were listening to his message.
And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.45Then the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the gentiles, too,
For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,46because they heard them speaking in foreign languages and praising God. Then Peter said,
“Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?47"No one can stop us from using water to baptize these people who have received the Holy Spirit in the same way that we did, can they?"
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.48So Peter ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah. Then they asked him to stay there for several days.
