New King James Version | NET Bible |
The burden against Tyre. Wail, you ships of Tarshish! For it is laid waste, So that there is no house, no harbor; From the land of Cyprus it is revealed to them. | 1Here is a message about Tyre: Wail, you large ships, for the port is too devastated to enter! From the land of Cyprus this news is announced to them. |
Be still, you inhabitants of the coastland, You merchants of Sidon, Whom those who cross the sea have filled. | 2Lament, you residents of the coast, you merchants of Sidon who travel over the sea, whose agents sail over |
And on great waters the grain of Shihor, The harvest of the River, is her revenue; And she is a marketplace for the nations. | 3the deep waters! Grain from the Shihor region, crops grown near the Nile she receives; she is the trade center of the nations. |
Be ashamed, O Sidon; For the sea has spoken, The strength of the sea, saying, “I do not labor, nor bring forth children; Neither do I rear young men, Nor bring up virgins.” | 4Be ashamed, O Sidon, for the sea says this, O fortress of the sea: "I have not gone into labor or given birth; I have not raised young men or brought up young women." |
When the report reaches Egypt, They also will be in agony at the report of Tyre. | 5When the news reaches Egypt, they will be shaken by what has happened to Tyre. |
Cross over to Tarshish; Wail, you inhabitants of the coastland! | 6Travel to Tarshish! Wail, you residents of the coast! |
Is this your joyous city, Whose antiquity is from ancient days, Whose feet carried her far off to dwell? | 7Is this really your boisterous city whose origins are in the distant past, and whose feet led her to a distant land to reside? |
Who has taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, Whose merchants are princes, Whose traders are the honorable of the earth? | 8Who planned this for royal Tyre, whose merchants are princes, whose traders are the dignitaries of the earth? |
The LORD of hosts has purposed it, To bring to dishonor the pride of all glory, To bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth. | 9The LORD who commands armies planned it--to dishonor the pride that comes from all her beauty, to humiliate all the dignitaries of the earth. |
Overflow through your land like the River, O daughter of Tarshish; There is no more strength. | 10Daughter Tarshish, travel back to your land, as one crosses the Nile; there is no longer any marketplace in Tyre. |
He stretched out His hand over the sea, He shook the kingdoms; The LORD has given a commandment against Canaan To destroy its strongholds. | 11The LORD stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook kingdoms; he gave the order to destroy Canaan's fortresses. |
And He said, “You will rejoice no more, O you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, cross over to Cyprus; There also you will have no rest.” | 12He said, "You will no longer celebrate, oppressed virgin daughter Sidon! Get up, travel to Cyprus, but you will find no relief there." |
Behold, the land of the Chaldeans, This people which was not; Assyria founded it for wild beasts of the desert. They set up its towers, They raised up its palaces, And brought it to ruin. | 13Look at the land of the Chaldeans, these people who have lost their identity! The Assyrians have made it a home for wild animals. They erected their siege towers, demolished its fortresses, and turned it into a heap of ruins. |
Wail, you ships of Tarshish! For your strength is laid waste. | 14Wail, you large ships, for your fortress is destroyed! |
Now it shall come to pass in that day that Tyre will be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot: | 15At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the typical life span of a king. At the end of seventy years Tyre will try to attract attention again, like the prostitute in the popular song: |
“Take a harp, go about the city, You forgotten harlot; Make sweet melody, sing many songs, That you may be remembered.” | 16"Take the harp, go through the city, forgotten prostitute! Play it well, play lots of songs, so you'll be noticed!" |
And it shall be, at the end of seventy years, that the LORD will deal with Tyre. She will return to her hire, and commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. | 17At the end of seventy years the LORD will revive Tyre. She will start making money again by selling her services to all the earth's kingdoms. |
Her gain and her pay will be set apart for the LORD; it will not be treasured nor laid up, for her gain will be for those who dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for fine clothing. | 18Her profits and earnings will be set apart for the LORD. They will not be stored up or accumulated, for her profits will be given to those who live in the LORD's presence and will be used to purchase large quantities of food and beautiful clothes. |
