New King James Version | NET Bible |
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: | 1The LORD spoke to Moses: |
“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the children of Israel. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.” | 2"Exact vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites--after that you will be gathered to your people." |
So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of yourselves for war, and let them go against the Midianites to take vengeance for the LORD on Midian. | 3So Moses spoke to the people: "Arm men from among you for the war, to attack the Midianites and to execute the LORD's vengeance on Midian. |
A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war.” | 4You must send to the battle a thousand men from every tribe throughout all the tribes of Israel." |
So there were recruited from the divisions of Israel one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. | 5So a thousand from every tribe, twelve thousand armed for battle in all, were provided out of the thousands of Israel. |
Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and the signal trumpets in his hand. | 6So Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from every tribe, with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who was in charge of the holy articles and the signal trumpets. |
And they warred against the Midianites, just as the LORD commanded Moses, and they killed all the males. | 7They fought against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses, and they killed every male. |
They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword. | 8They killed the kings of Midian in addition to those slain--Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba--five Midianite kings. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. |
And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods. | 9The Israelites took the women of Midian captives along with their little ones, and took all their herds, all their flocks, and all their goods as plunder. |
They also burned with fire all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts. | 10They burned all their towns where they lived and all their encampments. |
And they took all the spoil and all the booty—of man and beast. | 11They took all the plunder and all the spoils, both people and animals. |
Then they brought the captives, the booty, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. | 12They brought the captives and the spoils and the plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the Israelite community, to the camp on the plains of Moab, along the Jordan River across from Jericho. |
And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went to meet them outside the camp. | 13Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went out to meet them outside the camp. |
But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who had come from the battle. | 14But Moses was furious with the officers of the army, the commanders over thousands and commanders over hundreds, who had come from service in the war. |
And Moses said to them: “Have you kept all the women alive? | 15Moses said to them, "Have you allowed all the women to live? |
Look, these women caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the LORD in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD. | 16Look, these people through the counsel of Balaam caused the Israelites to act treacherously against the LORD in the matter of Peor--which resulted in the plague among the community of the LORD! |
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately. | 17Now therefore kill every boy, and kill every woman who has had sexual intercourse with a man. |
But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately. | 18But all the young women who have not had sexual intercourse with a man will be yours. |
And as for you, remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day. | 19"Any of you who has killed anyone or touched any of the dead, remain outside the camp for seven days; purify yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day. |
Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood.” | 20You must purify each garment and everything that is made of skin, everything made of goat's hair, and everything made of wood." |
Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, “This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses: | 21Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone into the battle, "This is the ordinance of the law that the LORD commanded Moses: |
Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, | 22Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, |
everything that can endure fire, you shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean; and it shall be purified with the water of purification. But all that cannot endure fire you shall put through water. | 23everything that may stand the fire, you are to pass through the fire, and it will be ceremonially clean, but it must still be purified with the water of purification. Anything that cannot withstand the fire you must pass through the water. |
And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp.” | 24You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you will be ceremonially clean, and afterward you may enter the camp.'" |
Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: | 25Then the LORD spoke to Moses: |
“Count up the plunder that was taken—of man and beast—you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation; | 26"You and Eleazar the priest, and all the family leaders of the community, take the sum of the plunder that was captured, both people and animals. |
and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. | 27Divide the plunder into two parts, one for those who took part in the war--who went out to battle--and the other for all the community. |
And levy a tribute for the LORD on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep; | 28"You must exact a tribute for the LORD from the fighting men who went out to battle: one life out of five hundred, from the people, the cattle, and from the donkeys and the sheep. |
take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest as a heave offering to the LORD. | 29You are to take it from their half-share and give it to Eleazar the priest for a raised offering to the LORD. |
And from the children of Israel’s half you shall take one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.” | 30From the Israelites' half-share you are to take one portion out of fifty of the people, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep--from every kind of animal--and you are to give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle." |
So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. | 31So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. |
The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, | 32The spoil that remained of the plunder which the fighting men had gathered was 675,000 sheep, |
seventy-two thousand cattle, | 3372,000 cattle, |
sixty-one thousand donkeys, | 3461,000 donkeys, |
and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately. | 35and 32,000 young women who had never had sexual intercourse with a man. |
And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep; | 36The half-portion of those who went to war numbered 337,500 sheep; |
and the LORD’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five. | 37the LORD's tribute from the sheep was 675. |
The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD’s tribute was seventy-two. | 38The cattle numbered 36,000; the LORD's tribute was 72. |
The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the LORD’s tribute was sixty-one. | 39The donkeys were 30,500, of which the LORD's tribute was 61. |
The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the LORD’s tribute was thirty-two persons. | 40The people were 16,000, of which the LORD's tribute was 32 people. |
So Moses gave the tribute which was the LORD’s heave offering to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses. | 41So Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD's raised offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses. |
And from the children of Israel’s half, which Moses separated from the men who fought— | 42From the Israelites' half-share that Moses had separated from the fighting men, |
now the half belonging to the congregation was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, | 43there were 337,500 sheep from the portion belonging to the community, |
thirty-six thousand cattle, | 4436,000 cattle, |
thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, | 4530,500 donkeys, |
and sixteen thousand persons— | 46and 16,000 people. |
and from the children of Israel’s half Moses took one of every fifty, drawn from man and beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses. | 47From the Israelites' share Moses took one of every fifty people and animals and gave them to the Levites who were responsible for the care of the Lord's tabernacle, just as the LORD commanded Moses. |
Then the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses; | 48Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders over thousands and the commanders over hundreds, approached Moses |
and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a count of the men of war who are under our command, and not a man of us is missing. | 49and said to him, "Your servants have taken a count of the men who were in the battle, who were under our authority, and not one is missing. |
Therefore we have brought an offering for the LORD, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.” | 50So we have brought as an offering for the LORD what each man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." |
So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, all the fashioned ornaments. | 51Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all of it in the form of ornaments. |
And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the LORD, from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. | 52All the gold of the offering they offered up to the LORD from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds weighed 16,750 shekels. |
(The men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.) | 53Each soldier had taken plunder for himself. |
And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of meeting as a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD. | 54So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD. |
