| 1The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: | 1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: |
| 2Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; | 2Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; |
| 3nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; | 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. |
| 4and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. | 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. |
| 5Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” | 5In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. | 6Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, | 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. |
| 7casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. | 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. |
| 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. | 8Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. |
| 9Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. | 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. |
| 10But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. | 10And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. |
| 11To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. |
