New King James Version | English Standard Version |
The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: | 1So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: |
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; | 2shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; |
nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; | 3not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. |
and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. | 4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. |
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” | 5Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” |
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, | 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, |
casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. | 7casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. |
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. | 8Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. |
Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. | 9Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. |
But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. | 10And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. |
To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. |
By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. | 12By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. |
She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son. | 13She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen. | 14Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. |
