To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Deer of the Dawn.” A Psalm of David. My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning? | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? |
O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent. | 2My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. |
But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel. | 3Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. |
Our fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them. | 4In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. |
They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed. | 5To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. |
But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people. | 6But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. |
All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, | 7All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. |
“He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!” | 8"He trusts in the LORD," they say, "let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." |
But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts. | 9Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast. |
I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God. | 10From birth I was cast on you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. |
Be not far from Me, For trouble is near; For there is none to help. | 11Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. |
Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me. | 12Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. |
They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion. | 13Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. |
I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. | 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. |
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death. | 15My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. |
For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; | 16Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. |
I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. | 17All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. |
They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots. | 18They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. |
But You, O LORD, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me! | 19But you, LORD, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. |
Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog. | 20Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. |
Save Me from the lion’s mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me. | 21Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen. |
I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. | 22I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. |
You who fear the LORD, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel! | 23You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! |
For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard. | 24For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. |
My praise shall be of You in the great assembly; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him. | 25From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows. |
The poor shall eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever! | 26The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him-- may your hearts live forever! |
All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You. | 27All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, |
For the kingdom is the LORD’s, And He rules over the nations. | 28for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations. |
All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive. | 29All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him-- those who cannot keep themselves alive. |
A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, | 30Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. |
They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this. | 31They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it! |
