New Living TranslationChristian Standard Bible
“Since you are the people of the LORD your God, never cut yourselves or shave the hair above your foreheads in mourning for the dead.1"You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut yourselves or make a bald spot on your head on behalf of the dead,
You have been set apart as holy to the LORD your God, and he has chosen you from all the nations of the earth to be his own special treasure.2for you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be his own possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.
“You must not eat any detestable animals that are ceremonially unclean.3"You must not eat any detestable thing.
These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,4These are the animals you may eat: oxen, sheep, goats,
the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the addax, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.5deer, gazelles, roe deer, wild goats, ibexes, antelopes, and mountain sheep.
“You may eat any animal that has completely split hooves and chews the cud,6You may eat any animal that has hooves divided in two and chews the cud.
but if the animal doesn’t have both, it may not be eaten. So you may not eat the camel, the hare, or the hyrax. They chew the cud but do not have split hooves, so they are ceremonially unclean for you.7But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves, you are not to eat these: camels, hares, and hyraxes, though they chew the cud, they do not have hooves--they are unclean for you;
And you may not eat the pig. It has split hooves but does not chew the cud, so it is ceremonially unclean for you. You may not eat the meat of these animals or even touch their carcasses.8and pigs, though they have hooves, they do not chew the cud--they are unclean for you. Do not eat their meat or touch their carcasses.
“Of all the marine animals, you may eat whatever has both fins and scales.9"You may eat everything from the water that has fins and scales,
You may not, however, eat marine animals that do not have both fins and scales. They are ceremonially unclean for you.10but you may not eat anything that does not have fins and scales--it is unclean for you.
“You may eat any bird that is ceremonially clean.11"You may eat every clean bird,
These are the birds you may not eat: the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,12but these are the ones you may not eat: eagles, bearded vultures, black vultures,
the kite, the falcon, buzzards of all kinds,13the kites, any kind of falcon,
ravens of all kinds,14every kind of raven,
the eagle owl, the short-eared owl, the seagull, hawks of all kinds,15ostriches, short-eared owls, gulls, any kind of hawk,
the little owl, the great owl, the barn owl,16little owls, long-eared owls, barn owls,
the desert owl, the Egyptian vulture, the cormorant,17eagle owls, ospreys, cormorants,
the stork, herons of all kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat.18storks, any kind of heron, hoopoes, and bats.
“All winged insects that walk along the ground are ceremonially unclean for you and may not be eaten.19All winged insects are unclean for you; they may not be eaten.
But you may eat any winged bird or insect that is ceremonially clean.20But you may eat every clean flying creature.
“You must not eat anything that has died a natural death. You may give it to a foreigner living in your town, or you may sell it to a stranger. But do not eat it yourselves, for you are set apart as holy to the LORD your God. “You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk. The Giving of Tithes21"You are not to eat any carcass; you may give it to a resident alien within your city gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. Do not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.
“You must set aside a tithe of your crops—one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year.22"Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields.
Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship—the place the LORD your God chooses for his name to be honored—and eat it there in his presence. This applies to your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn males of your flocks and herds. Doing this will teach you always to fear the LORD your God.23You are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and fresh oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, in the presence of the LORD your God at the place where he chooses to have his name dwell, so that you will always learn to fear the LORD your God.
“Now when the LORD your God blesses you with a good harvest, the place of worship he chooses for his name to be honored might be too far for you to bring the tithe.24But if the distance is too great for you to carry it, since the place where the LORD your God chooses to put his name is too far away from you and since the LORD your God has blessed you,
If so, you may sell the tithe portion of your crops and herds, put the money in a pouch, and go to the place the LORD your God has chosen.25then exchange it for silver, take the silver in your hand, and go to the place the LORD your God chooses.
When you arrive, you may use the money to buy any kind of food you want—cattle, sheep, goats, wine, or other alcoholic drink. Then feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and celebrate with your household.26You may spend the silver on anything you want: cattle, sheep, goats, wine, beer, or anything you desire. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice with your family.
And do not neglect the Levites in your town, for they will receive no allotment of land among you.27Do not neglect the Levite within your city gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.
“At the end of every third year, bring the entire tithe of that year’s harvest and store it in the nearest town.28"At the end of every three years, bring a tenth of all your produce for that year and store it within your city gates.
Give it to the Levites, who will receive no allotment of land among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all your work.29Then the Levite, who has no portion or inheritance among you, the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow within your city gates may come, eat, and be satisfied. And the LORD your God will bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.
