When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. | 1Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guards, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there. |
The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. | 2The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. |
Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. | 3When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made everything he did successful, |
This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. | 4Joseph found favor with his master and became his personal attendant. Potiphar also put him in charge of his household and placed all that he owned under his authority. |
From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished. | 5From the time that he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The LORD's blessing was on all that he owned, in his house and in his fields. |
So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, | 6He left all that he owned under Joseph's authority; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome. |
and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded. | 7After some time his master's wife looked longingly at Joseph and said, "Sleep with me." |
But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. | 8But he refused. "Look," he said to his master's wife, "with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority. |
No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” | 9No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this immense evil, and how could I sin against God?" |
She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. | 10Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her. |
One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. | 11Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there. |
She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. | 12She grabbed him by his garment and said, "Sleep with me!" But leaving his garment in her hand, he escaped and ran outside. |
When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled, | 13When she saw that he had left his garment with her and had run outside, |
she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. | 14she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "my husband brought a Hebrew man to make fools of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, and I screamed as loud as I could. |
When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.” | 15When he heard me screaming for help, he left his garment beside me and ran outside." |
She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home. | 16She put Joseph's garment beside her until his master came home. |
Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said. | 17Then she told him the same story: "The Hebrew slave you brought to us came to make a fool of me, |
“But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!” Joseph Put in Prison | 18but when I screamed for help, he left his garment beside me and ran outside." |
Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her. | 19When his master heard the story his wife told him--"These are the things your slave did to me"--he was furious |
So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained. | 20and had him thrown into prison, where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph was there in prison. |
But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. | 21But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him. He granted him favor with the prison warden. |
Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. | 22The warden put all the prisoners who were in the prison under Joseph's authority, and he was responsible for everything that was done there. |
The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed. | 23The warden did not bother with anything under Joseph's authority, because the LORD was with him, and the LORD made everything that he did successful. |
