New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
“I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith. | 1"I have told you this to keep you from falling away. |
For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. | 2You'll be thrown out of the synagogues. Yes, a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he's serving God. |
This is because they have never known the Father or me. | 3They'll do this because they haven't known the Father or me. |
Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer. The Work of the Holy Spirit | 4But I've told you this, so that when the time comes you'll remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you this in the beginning, because I was still with you." |
“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. | 5"But now I am going to the one who sent me. Yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' |
Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. | 6But because I have told you this, sorrow has filled your hearts. |
But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. | 7However, I'm telling you the truth. It's for your advantage that I'm going away, because if I don't go away, the Helper won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. |
And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. | 8When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment— |
The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. | 9of sin, because they don't believe in me; |
Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. | 10of righteousness, because I'm going to the Father and you will no longer see me; |
Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged. | 11and of judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. |
“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. | 12"I still have a lot to say to you, but you cannot bear it now. |
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. | 13Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he'll guide you into all truth. He won't speak on his own accord, but he'll speak whatever he hears and will declare to you the things that are to come. |
He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. | 14He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. |
All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’ Sadness Will Be Turned to Joy | 15All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said, 'He will take what is mine and declare it to you.' |
“In a little while you won’t see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again.” | 16In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again." |
Some of the disciples asked each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, but then you will see me,’ and ‘I am going to the Father’? | 17At this point, some of his disciples asked each other, "What does he mean by telling us, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again,' and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" |
And what does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand.” | 18They kept saying, "What is this 'in a little while' that he keeps talking about? We don't know what he means." |
Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won’t see me, but a little while after that you will see me again. | 19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him a question, so he asked them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will no longer see me, then in a little while you will see me again'? |
I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy. | 20Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you'll cry and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You'll be deeply distressed, but your pain will turn into joy. |
It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world. | 21When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her time has come. Yet when she has given birth to her child, she doesn't remember the agony anymore because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. |
So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. | 22Now you are having pain. But I'll see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. |
At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. | 23On that day, you won't ask me for anything. Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give it to you. |
You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. | 24So far you haven't asked for anything in my name. Keep asking and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete." |
“I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father. | 25"I have said these things to you in figurative language. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly about the Father. |
Then you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, | 26At that time, you will make your requests in my name, so that I will have no need to ask the Father on your behalf, |
for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God. | 27because the Father himself loves you, and because you have loved me and believed that I came from God. |
Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father.” | 28I left the Father and came into the world. Now I'm leaving the world and going back to the Father." |
Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively. | 29Jesus' disciples said, "Well, now you're speaking plainly and not using figurative language. |
Now we understand that you know everything, and there’s no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God.” | 30Now we know that you know everything and don't need to have anyone ask you any questions. Because of this, we believe that you have come from God." |
Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? | 31Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? |
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. | 32Listen, the time is coming, indeed it has already come, when you will be scattered, each of you to his own home, and you will leave me all by myself. Yet I'm not alone, because the Father is with me. |
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” | 33I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world you'll have trouble, but be courageous—I've overcome the world!" |
