| 1And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest. | 1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; |
| 2For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house. | 2Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. |
| 3But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. | 3For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. |
| 4For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God. | 4For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. |
| 5Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. | 5And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; |
| 6But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ. | 6But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. |
| 7That is why the Holy Spirit says, “Today when you hear his voice, | 7Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, |
| 8don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. | 8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: |
| 9There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years. | 9When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. |
| 10So I was angry with them, and I said, ‘Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’ | 10Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. |
| 11So in my anger I took an oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest.’” | 11So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) |
| 12Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. | 12Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. |
| 13You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. | 13But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. |
| 14For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. | 14For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; |
| 15Remember what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.” | 15While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. |
| 16And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? | 16For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. |
| 17And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? | 17But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? |
| 18And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? | 18And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? |
| 19So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest. | 19So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. |
