When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home.1And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.
Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them,2And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat.3And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus.4And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”5When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,6But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
“What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”7Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?8And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’?9Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said,10But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
“Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”11I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!” Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew)12And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him.13And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.
As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.14And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.)15And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum? ”16And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” A Discussion about Fasting17When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?”18And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?
Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them.19And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.20But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
“Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.21No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.” A Discussion about the Sabbath22And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.23And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”24And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?25And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”26How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.27And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”28Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
