| 1When the LORD brought back his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream! | 1A song of ascents. When the LORD restored the well-being of Zion, we thought we were dreaming. |
| 2We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the LORD has done for them.” | 2At that time we laughed loudly and shouted for joy. At that time the nations said, "The LORD has accomplished great things for these people." |
| 3Yes, the LORD has done amazing things for us! What joy! | 3The LORD did indeed accomplish great things for us. We were happy. |
| 4Restore our fortunes, LORD, as streams renew the desert. | 4O LORD, restore our well-being, just as the streams in the arid south are replenished. |
| 5Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. | 5Those who shed tears as they plant will shout for joy when they reap the harvest. |
| 6They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest. | 6The one who weeps as he walks along, carrying his bag of seed, will certainly come in with a shout of joy, carrying his sheaves of grain. |
