Believers' response to opposing authority?
How should believers respond when authority figures oppose God's commands, as in Exodus 5:4?

Setting the Scene

“ But the king of Egypt said to them, ‘Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!’ ” (Exodus 5:4)

Pharaoh’s words capture a recurring clash: earthly authority demanding one thing, God commanding another. What do we do when those orders collide?

Recognize the Tension Between Two Loyalties

• God institutes human authority (Romans 13:1), yet His commands outrank every earthly decree (Acts 5:29).

• Expect friction; Scripture warns that “all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).

• The tension itself is not failure—it is the refining point of faith (James 1:2-4).

Follow God First, Respect Authority Second

• Obedience to God is non-negotiable (Exodus 3:18; Daniel 3:16-18).

• Still show basic respect: Moses addressed Pharaoh courteously (Exodus 5:1-3); Daniel honored Nebuchadnezzar’s position even while refusing idolatry (Daniel 3:18).

• Speak truth plainly: Peter and John answered, “We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19-20).

Respond with Courageous Obedience

• Keep doing what God has said—no retreats, no shortcuts.

• Courage grows from conviction that God is with us (Joshua 1:9).

• Remember the reward: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake” (Matthew 5:10-12).

Persevere Through Opposition

• Expect delays and pushback (Exodus 5:20-23).

• Pray rather than panic—see Moses pouring out his frustration to the LORD (Exodus 5:22-23).

• Trust God’s unfolding plan; oppression often precedes great deliverance (Exodus 6:1).

Stand Together as God’s People

• Moses did not face Pharaoh alone—Aaron, the elders, and eventually the whole nation stood with him (Exodus 4:29-31).

• Gather with believers for encouragement (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Unified witness magnifies courage (Philippians 1:27-28).

Look for God’s Larger Purpose

• Opposition highlights God’s power: Pharaoh’s hard heart set the stage for the plagues and the Exodus (Exodus 7 – 12).

• Suffering refines faith and testifies to unbelievers (1 Peter 2:12).

• God’s glory is the endgame, not our comfort (Romans 11:36).

Practical Takeaways for Today

• Feed conviction daily in Scripture; knowing God’s Word clarifies when a command crosses the line.

• Pray for authorities (1 Timothy 2:1-2) while refusing to comply with orders that defy God.

• Keep a gentle tone but a firm stance—“speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15).

• Prepare to accept consequences with joy, like the apostles who “rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer” (Acts 5:41).

• Lean on the Spirit’s power; our battle is spiritual before it is political (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Compare Pharaoh's attitude in Exodus 5:4 with Romans 1:21-22. What similarities exist?
