Bible stories of God defeating enemies?
What other Bible stories show God driving out enemies for His people?

Joshua 3:10—A Living Pattern

“This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that He will surely drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.” (Joshua 3:10)

Just as Israel stood on the banks of the Jordan, God had already been driving out enemies for His people—and He kept doing it again and again. Below are some of the clearest snapshots.

Crossing the Red Sea—Exodus 14

• Pharaoh’s army thundered behind; water walled up ahead.

• God split the sea, led Israel through on dry ground, then released the waters on Egypt.

• “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)

The Walls of Jericho—Joshua 6

• Israel marched, shouted, and watched walls crumble without swinging a sword.

• “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and mighty men of valor.” (Joshua 6:2)

• The victory in Joshua 6 is the immediate fulfillment of the promise proclaimed in Joshua 3:10.

Hailstones and a Lengthened Day—Joshua 10

• Five Amorite kings joined forces; Israel pursued.

• “The LORD hurled large hailstones down on them… more died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites.” (Joshua 10:11)

• Even the sun stood still so Israel could finish the rout—heaven and earth enlisted in God’s army.

Gideon and the Midianites—Judges 7

• Three hundred men with jars and trumpets versus a vast Midianite host.

• “Get up and go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.” (Judges 7:9)

• Panic sent Midianites slashing at one another—proof that God’s strength, not Israel’s numbers, decides the outcome.

Deborah, Barak, and Sisera—Judges 4–5

• Israel faced iron chariots under Sisera.

• “Arise, for this is the day the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” (Judges 4:14)

• A sudden torrent from heaven turned the chariots into liabilities (Judges 5:20-21).

Jonathan’s Two-Man Raid—1 Samuel 14

• Jonathan and his armor-bearer climbed a cliff and attacked a Philistine outpost.

• “For nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.” (1 Samuel 14:6)

• God shook the ground; Philistines ran in confusion.

David—From Goliath to Philistine Defeat

• With one stone David toppled the giant: “the battle belongs to the LORD” (1 Samuel 17:47).

• Later, when the Philistines returned, God broke through them “like a bursting flood” (2 Samuel 5:20).

Jehoshaphat’s Choir Wins the Battle—2 Chronicles 20

• Three allied armies closed in on Judah.

• “You need not fight this battle… see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf.” (2 Chronicles 20:17)

• Worship led the way; enemies turned their swords on each other.

One Angel Versus Assyria—2 Kings 19

• 185,000 Assyrian soldiers surrounded Jerusalem.

• “That night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians.” (2 Kings 19:35)

• Not a single arrow was fired from the city walls.

Why These Stories Matter

• They showcase the same “living God” Joshua trusted—unchanged in power or purpose.

• Each account underlines a core truth: victory is God’s gift, not human accomplishment.

• The pattern gives modern believers confidence that God still overrules impossible odds, protects His people, and keeps every promise just as literally as He did at the Jordan.

How can we trust God's promises like Israel did in Joshua 3:10?
