Biblical examples of God altering nature?
What other biblical instances show God altering natural laws for His purposes?

The Shadow Reversed

“Hezekiah said, ‘It is easy for the shadow to lengthen ten steps, but not for it to go back ten steps.’ ” (2 Kings 20:10)

In response, the LORD moved the sun’s shadow backward—time itself seemed to rewind, displaying His sovereignty over the cosmic order.

Waters Parted and Piled Up

Exodus 14:21-22—“All night the LORD drove the sea back…The Israelites went through the sea on dry ground.”

Joshua 3:15-17—The Jordan “stood still” in flood season so Israel could cross.

Suspending the normal flow and gravitational pull of water, God carved dry highways where only waves had been.

Heavenly Bodies on Hold

Joshua 10:13—“So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped…The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.”

Orbital mechanics yielded to God’s battle plan.

Fire That Doesn’t Burn

Daniel 3:27—“The fire had no power over the bodies of those men; nor was a hair of their heads singed.”

Flames obeyed their Creator, protecting Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

An Axe Head That Floats

2 Kings 6:6—“When he threw it in, the iron floated and Elisha said, ‘Pick it up.’”

Gravity was overruled so a borrowed tool could be returned.

Animals Acting Beyond Instinct

Numbers 22:28—“Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam…”

Daniel 6:22—“My God sent His angel and shut the mouths of the lions.”

Speech and hunger patterns were overridden to fulfill divine warnings and protection.

Provision by Creative Supply

Exodus 16:14-15—Manna appeared daily in the desert.

1 Kings 17:14-16—Flour and oil “were not used up” for Elijah, the widow, and her son.

Matthew 14:19-21—Five loaves and two fish fed “about five thousand men, besides women and children.”

Normal rules of scarcity bowed to God’s generosity.

Nature Rewritten in the Ministry of Jesus

John 2:9—Water became wine at Cana.

Matthew 8:26—Wind and waves calmed at a word.

Matthew 14:25—Jesus walked on the sea.

Molecular structure, weather systems, and surface tension all fell in line with the authority of the Son.

Life Restored

1 Kings 17:22—Elijah prayed and “the boy’s life returned to him.”

John 11:43-44—“Lazarus, come out!” and the dead man walked.

Luke 24:6—“He is not here; He has risen!”

The ultimate natural law—death—was conquered, proving every lesser miracle believable.

Cosmic Signs at the Cross

Matthew 27:45—“From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.”

The sky itself testified as creation reacted to the crucifixion.

Why These Miracles Matter

Each event confirms that the laws of nature are God’s servants, not His masters. The One who established gravity, thermodynamics, and biology can momentarily reshape them to reveal His power, protect His people, or advance His redemptive plan—just as He did when He turned a shadow backward for King Hezekiah.
