In what ways can we "remove the devoted things" from our lives today? The Original Warning: Joshua 7:13 “Go and consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: “There are devoted things among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.”’ ” What Are “Devoted Things” Today? • Anything God’s Word declares off-limits—occult objects, pornographic material, idols, illegal substances • Habits that entice the flesh and grieve the Spirit (Galatians 5:19-21; Colossians 3:5) • Entertainment that normalizes sin (Psalm 101:3) • Relationships that continually pull us toward disobedience (1 Corinthians 15:33) • Secret sins we excuse or hide (Psalm 90:8; Luke 12:2) • Possessions gained dishonestly or that foster pride and greed (Proverbs 10:2; 1 Timothy 6:10) First Step: Search Your Heart • Invite the Spirit’s spotlight: “Search me, O God… Point out anything that offends You” (Psalm 139:23-24). • Measure every area by Scripture’s plumb line, not culture’s shifting standards (2 Timothy 3:16-17). • Write down whatever the Spirit identifies—be specific. Second Step: Separate and Destroy • Physically remove the object, delete the file, cancel the subscription, end the unhealthy partnership—decisively (Matthew 5:29-30). • Replace secrecy with confession to God and a trustworthy believer (James 5:16; 1 John 1:9). • If restitution is required, make it promptly (Luke 19:8). • Guard the door afterward—“make no provision for the flesh” (Romans 13:14). Third Step: Replace with Devotion to Christ • Fill the cleared space with Scripture intake, worship, and prayer (Psalm 119:11; Colossians 3:16). • Cultivate relationships that spur holiness (Hebrews 10:24-25). • Redirect resources once spent on “devoted things” toward kingdom purposes—generosity, missions, serving the poor (2 Corinthians 9:7). • Establish new rhythms—fasting, Sabbath rest, regular self-examination (1 Corinthians 9:27). Lasting Results of Removal • Renewed fellowship and unhindered prayer (Psalm 66:18; 1 Peter 3:12). • Spiritual authority restored—“submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee” (James 4:7). • Clear conscience and joy (Romans 8:1; Psalm 51:12). • Readiness for every good work (2 Timothy 2:21): vessels cleansed, set apart, useful to the Master. |
