How can we seek God's help in opposition?
In what ways can we seek God's help when facing opposition today?

Opening the Text

“Even Assyria has joined them, lending strength to the sons of Lot. Selah” (Psalm 83:8)

The psalmist sees Israel surrounded by a coalition of hostile nations. Their opposition is real, organized, and determined—yet the psalm is a prayer, not a panic. That pattern guides us today.

Recognizing the Real Battle

• Scripture treats opposition as both physical and spiritual (Ephesians 6:12).

• God’s people have always faced alliances stronger than they are on paper (2 Chronicles 20:1–2).

• Because Scripture is accurate and literal, we trust that the God who answered then still answers now (Malachi 3:6).

Ways to Seek God’s Help Today

1. Call on His Name

• “O my God, do not keep silent” (Psalm 83:1).

• Take immediate concerns to Him first (Philippians 4:6-7).

• Speak candidly—lament, confess fear, ask for intervention.

2. Appeal to His Past Faithfulness

• The psalmist remembers past deliverance (Psalm 83:9-11).

• Recall personal testimonies and biblical examples (Psalm 77:11-12).

• Faith grows when we rehearse what God has already done.

3. Stand on His Sovereignty

• “You alone, whose name is the LORD, are Most High over all the earth” (Psalm 83:18).

• Opposition often feels big, but God is bigger (Psalm 46:10).

• Rest in His control instead of retaliating in the flesh (Romans 12:19).

4. Fight with Spiritual Armor

Ephesians 6:10-18 outlines prayer-saturated warfare.

• Truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, God’s Word, and prayer form our defense and offense.

• Opposition pushes us toward deeper dependence.

5. Walk in Obedience and Holiness

• Israel’s victories were tied to covenant faithfulness (Deuteronomy 28:1-7).

• Sin invites defeat; repentance invites protection (Psalm 66:18-20).

• Holiness keeps the line of communication clear (1 Peter 3:12).

6. Stand Together

• The enemy coalition was united; God’s people must be too (Philippians 1:27).

• Share burdens (Galatians 6:2), pray corporately (Acts 12:5), encourage each other (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Isolation weakens; fellowship fortifies.

7. Persist in Hope

• “Selah” invites a pause—faith refuses hurried despair.

• Wait expectantly (Psalm 27:13-14).

• God often turns opposition into testimony (Genesis 50:20).

Taking It Forward

Opposition may join forces, but so do we—with the Lord of hosts. By praying earnestly, remembering His works, resting in His sovereignty, wearing His armor, walking in holiness, uniting with fellow believers, and persisting in hope, we follow the Psalm 83 blueprint and experience God’s timely help today.
