How can you selflessly help others today?
In what ways can you "lay down your life" for others today?

The Foundational Verse

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

Christ’s Pattern, Our Privilege

• Jesus literally surrendered His life; that historic, bodily sacrifice is the model (1 Peter 2:24).

• Believers are therefore called to the same readiness—even to death if necessary—but also to daily, practical self-sacrifice (1 John 3:16; Luke 9:23).

Everyday Ways to Lay Down Your Life

• Time investment

– Sit with the lonely, teach a child to read, drive an elderly neighbor to appointments.

– “Make the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16)

• Financial generosity

– Cover someone’s rent, fund a missionary, buy groceries for a struggling family.

– “He who gathered much had no excess, and he who gathered little had no shortage.” (2 Corinthians 8:15)

• Relinquishing comfort

– Serve in disaster relief, foster children, volunteer for the night shift at church security.

– “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.” (Romans 12:1)

• Sacrificial listening

– Turn off your phone, give undivided attention to a hurting friend.

– “Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.” (Romans 12:15)

• Protecting the vulnerable

– Stand up for the unborn, defend a bullied classmate, advocate for persecuted believers.

– “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” (Proverbs 31:8-9)

• Risking reputation for truth

– Refuse workplace corruption, lovingly confront false teaching, uphold biblical marriage in conversation.

– “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.” (Ephesians 6:14)

• Forgiving costly offenses

– Absorb the hurt rather than retaliate, pursue reconciliation.

– “Just as the Lord forgave you, so also you must forgive.” (Colossians 3:13)

• Marital and family surrender

– Husbands love sacrificially (Ephesians 5:25); parents lay aside hobbies to disciple children (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

• Intercessory warfare

– Lose sleep to pray through the night, fast regularly for a prodigal.

– “The effective prayer of a righteous man has great power.” (James 5:16)

• Opening your home

– Host missionaries, asylum seekers, college students on break.

– “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.” (Hebrews 13:2)

• Mentoring the next generation

– Invest years in a younger believer, pass on skills and doctrine.

– “Entrust these things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)

• Sharing the gospel despite cost

– Witness at work, on campus, in restricted nations.

– “I am not ashamed of the gospel.” (Romans 1:16)

The Heart Behind the Actions

• Motivated by gratitude for Christ’s finished work (2 Corinthians 5:14-15).

• Empowered by the Spirit, not human resolve (Galatians 5:22-25).

• Looking to the eternal reward, just as Jesus endured “for the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2).

A Life Poured Out

When love compels you to place someone else’s wellbeing above your own—whether through martyrdom or daily self-denial—you are living out John 15:13. Such surrender preaches Christ louder than words and stores up imperishable treasure in heaven.

How does John 10:11 connect with Psalm 23's depiction of a shepherd?
