How does the cross show God's wisdom?
What does "Christ and Him crucified" reveal about God's wisdom and power?

Why Paul Focused on the Cross

“For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2)

• Paul deliberately narrowed his message to the crucified Messiah because every facet of God’s saving plan converges at the cross.

• By doing so, he set human eloquence aside so that God’s own wisdom and power would stand out (1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

The Cross: God’s Wisdom Displayed

• Turns human logic upside down

‑ “The foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom” (1 Corinthians 1:25).

Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that God’s thoughts tower over ours; the cross proves it by bringing life through death.

• Solves the unsolvable problem of sin

‑ Our sin-debt was “canceled… nailing it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14).

‑ Christ becomes “wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30).

• Unifies diverse peoples

‑ “Both Jews and Greeks” find in Christ “the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24).

‑ No culture could design such an all-inclusive rescue plan.

• Magnifies God, not the messenger

‑ By choosing a despised Roman instrument of death, God removed every ground for boasting in human achievement (1 Corinthians 1:29).

The Cross: God’s Power Released

• Power to save

‑ “The message of the cross… is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).

‑ “It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).

• Power to defeat spiritual enemies

‑ Christ “disarmed the powers and authorities… triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2:15).

• Power to create new life

‑ The same power that raised Jesus works in believers (Ephesians 1:19-20), making us “a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

• Power made perfect in perceived weakness

‑ The cross looks like weakness, yet it breaks sin’s chains and shatters death’s hold (Hebrews 2:14-15).

Practical Implications for Believers

• Rest confidence on Christ’s finished work, not personal merit.

• Speak the gospel plainly; its power is intrinsic, not in our presentation.

• Celebrate unity in the body of Christ, formed at the foot of the cross.

• Live boldly, knowing God’s power operates through apparent weakness.
