How to aid hardworking yet hungry?
How can we support those who work hard but remain hungry, as in Job 24:11?

Setting the Scene in Job 24:11

“ ‘They crush olives within their walls; they tread the winepresses, yet go thirsty.’ ” (Job 24:11)

Job highlights a tragic injustice: people laboring in the very production of food and drink, yet remaining unfed and unrefreshed themselves.

Recognizing the Reality Today

• Employees who harvest, package, or serve food yet rely on food banks

• Workers holding multiple part-time jobs without livable wages

• Small farmers squeezed by exploitative contracts

• Migrant laborers paid late or under the table, unable to afford meals

God’s Heart for the Laboring Poor

• “You shall not oppress a hired worker… you shall give him his wages on the same day” (Deuteronomy 24:14-15).

• “Look, the wages you failed to pay the workers… are crying out” (James 5:4).

• “Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors Him” (Proverbs 14:31).

• Jesus fed the hungry crowds (Matthew 15:32-37) and proclaimed “good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18).

Practical Ways to Support

• Pay promptly and fairly, honoring the spirit of Deuteronomy 24:15.

• Employ ethically: provide contracts, benefits, and safe conditions (Leviticus 19:13).

• Share surplus: model the gleaning principle (Leviticus 19:9-10) through food-pantry donations and community fridges.

• Invite workers to the table: hospitality mirrors Christ’s open feast (Luke 14:13-14).

• Fund micro-loans or skill-training programs that lift wages long-term (Proverbs 31:20).

• Champion local producers by purchasing directly, ensuring more income reaches the laborer (Jeremiah 22:13).

Guarding Against Exploitation

• Refuse to partner with businesses known for wage theft or unsafe practices.

• Report violations; “defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:9).

• In leadership roles, set transparent pay scales and review them regularly (Colossians 4:1).

Living Out the Gospel Together

• Give generously so “there may be equality” (2 Corinthians 8:13-15).

• Organize church food co-ops that lower grocery costs for workers.

• Mentor younger believers to view employment decisions through the lens of loving one’s neighbor (Matthew 22:39).

• Remember that caring for laborers is caring for Christ Himself: “I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat” (Matthew 25:35-40).
