How to be open to God's teachings?
How can we ensure our hearts are like "new wineskins" for God's teachings?

Opening the Text

“And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.” (Mark 2:22)

Understanding New Wineskins

• In first-century Israel, wineskins were made of tanned goat hide.

• Fresh skins were flexible, able to stretch as new wine fermented.

• Old skins became rigid, cracking under the pressure of expanding wine.

• Jesus used this image to teach that God’s living word requires hearts willing to expand, grow, and change under the Spirit’s power.

Why Hearts Need Renewal

• The natural human heart resists God’s ways (Jeremiah 17:9).

• Sin hardens, creating the spiritual equivalent of brittle leather (Hebrews 3:13).

• The Lord promises a new, responsive heart: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:26).

• Only a regenerated heart can fully receive and retain the fresh work of the gospel.

Practices for Becoming New Wineskins

• Daily repentance: turning from specific sins keeps the heart supple (Acts 3:19).

• Humble submission: gladly yielding to God’s authority prevents rigidity (James 4:6-7).

• Ongoing Scripture intake: “Receive with meekness the implanted word” (James 1:21).

• Prayerful meditation: allowing the Spirit to press truth deep within (Psalm 119:15).

• Fellowship with believers who sharpen and encourage growth (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Quick obedience: responding promptly to conviction maintains tenderness (John 14:21).

• Regular self-examination under the light of God’s word (Psalm 139:23-24).

Guarding Against Old Wineskins

• Tradition elevated above revelation creates inflexibility (Mark 7:8-9).

• Pride resists change and quenches the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19).

• Unconfessed sin forms spiritual scar tissue (Psalm 32:3-4).

• Fear of the unfamiliar stifles growth (2 Timothy 1:7).

• Neglect of spiritual disciplines allows the heart to dry out (Proverbs 4:23).

Living as Ready Vessels

• “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

• A renewed heart welcomes fresh insight without discarding eternal truth.

• In Christ, believers become “new creations” (2 Corinthians 5:17), fit to carry the life-giving wine of the kingdom.

• By God’s grace, pliable hearts remain open, stretchable, and strong, holding the fullness of His ever-fresh revelation without splitting under its power.
