How to benefit future believers today?
How can we ensure our actions today positively impact future believers?

Joshua 22:28—Setting the Stage

“And we thought, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we can answer: “Look at the replica of the LORD’s altar that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.”’

Why This Moment Matters

• The eastern tribes feared future generations would be cut off from worship at Shiloh.

• They built a replica altar—not for sacrifices, but as a perpetual testimony that they belonged to the LORD.

• Their action shows foresight: today’s obedience shapes tomorrow’s faith.

Building Visible Witnesses to God’s Faithfulness

• Create tangible reminders of God’s work—journals, memorial stones, or even family traditions.

Joshua 4:6–7: twelve stones from the Jordan were “a sign among you … so that all the peoples of the earth may know.”

Psalm 102:18: “Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD.”

Teaching and Telling the Story

Deuteronomy 6:6–7: impress the words of God on your children “when you sit … walk … lie down … get up.”

Psalm 78:4: “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation.”

• Practical steps:

—Read Scripture aloud together.

—Share personal testimonies of answered prayer.

—Celebrate God’s interventions annually so they become part of family lore.

Modeling Consistent Obedience

1 Timothy 4:12: “Set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.”

Titus 2:7: “In everything, show yourself to be an example of good deeds.”

• When daily living matches declared beliefs, faith becomes credible and contagious.

• Conversely, Judges 2:10 warns that hypocrisy breeds spiritual amnesia in the next generation.

Guarding Unity within the Body

• The replica altar defused potential division (Joshua 22:31).

Ephesians 4:3: “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.”

• A united church provides an environment where future believers thrive.

Investing in Multiplying Disciples

2 Timothy 2:2: entrust truth “to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others also.”

Hebrews 13:7: remember leaders “who spoke the word of God to you.”

• Mentor intentionally: pair younger believers with seasoned saints, encouraging skillful handling of Scripture.

Letting Light Shine Publicly

Matthew 5:16: our good works glorify the Father and draw observers to Him.

Hebrews 12:1: live so that the “great cloud of witnesses” sees perseverance.

• Community impact today plants seeds of curiosity and conviction for tomorrow.

Evaluating Our Current Foundation

1 Corinthians 3:10–15: build with materials that survive God’s testing—truth, love, holiness.

• Ask: does each choice reinforce or erode the witness we leave?

Putting It into Today’s Practice

• Mark milestones: dedicate a family Bible, date answered prayers, photograph baptisms.

• Schedule inter-generational gatherings where testimonies are shared.

• Volunteer side-by-side with children, grandchildren, or new believers in gospel outreach.

• Speak words of blessing regularly; they linger longer than we realize.

• Protect doctrinal purity—study Scripture diligently so what you hand off is undiluted truth.

• Live transparently: admit failures, repent quickly, display the gospel’s restoring power.

When actions mirror belief, memorials stand firm, and teaching is faithful, future believers will look back—just as Israel could look at the replica altar—and know without doubt, “These forefathers belonged to the LORD, and so do we.”

Connect Joshua 22:28 with other biblical examples of memorials or witnesses.
