How can we actively "put off your former way of life" today? The call to put off the old self “to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires” (Ephesians 4:22). • In Christ, the “old self” is already judged at the cross (Romans 6:6). • Day-to-day, we choose to lay aside habits, thoughts, and patterns that belong to that crucified life. Know the enemy: deceitful desires • Sin sells half-truths; it promises pleasure but pays with bondage (James 1:14-15). • Identify recurring temptations—lust, anger, greed, gossip, self-pity—and call them what God calls them. • Remember: “Each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires” (James 1:14). Renew your mind daily • Scripture intake—read, memorize, meditate. “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). • Replace lies with truth. Philippians 4:8 gives the grid for godly thinking. • Journal insights; speak truth aloud when old thoughts resurface. Confess and repent immediately • Keep short accounts with God: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive…” (1 John 1:9). • Invite trusted believers to hear your struggles. “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other” (James 5:16). • Repentance is active—turning from sin and turning to obedience. Fill the wardrobe with Christ’s virtues • Taking off must be matched with putting on (Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:12-14). • Cultivate specific opposites: ‑ Impurity → purity of heart and behavior ‑ Bitterness → forgiveness ‑ Self-centeredness → servanthood • Practice these virtues until they feel natural; the Spirit shapes muscle memory. Guard your influences • What you watch, scroll, and listen to disciples you. • Set filters, limits, and accountability software where needed. • Surround yourself with voices that elevate Christ rather than provoke the flesh. Walk in community • The church is a workshop for new-self living (Hebrews 10:24-25). • Small groups, mentors, and spiritual friendships give feedback and encouragement. • Celebrate wins together; mourn failures together; keep each other moving forward. Depend on the Spirit in every step • “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). • Ask for His power before tough meetings, in boring moments, during late-night temptations. • Thank Him when He provides the way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). Looking ahead: a life dressed in the new self • “Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24). • Progress, not perfection—the old clothes may tug, but they no longer own you. • Every obedient choice writes a testimony that the risen Christ truly makes people new (2 Corinthians 5:17). |
