How to inspire generous giving?
How can we encourage others to give generously as seen in Exodus 35:27?

Leaders set the pace

Exodus 35:27: “The leaders brought onyx stones and gemstones to mount on the ephod and breastpiece.”

• Generosity that begins with those in visible responsibility inspires confidence and imitation.

• Practical step: encourage pastors, elders, and ministry heads to speak openly about their own giving testimony (without dollar amounts).

• Supporting passages: 1 Chronicles 29:6–9; 2 Corinthians 8:3.

Share the vision, not just the need

• Israel’s leaders knew exactly why the gems were needed—the ephod and breastpiece for worship.

• People give more freely when they see purpose: describe ministries, lives, and communities that will be touched.

• Supporting passages: Nehemiah 2:17–18; Philippians 4:15–17.

Appeal to willing hearts

Exodus 35:21: “Everyone whose heart stirred him and whose spirit prompted him came…”

• Teach that God values the motive more than the amount.

• Encourage personal prayer before giving so that offerings flow from gratitude.

• Supporting passages: 2 Corinthians 9:7; Proverbs 3:9.

Connect giving to worship

• The gems were destined for priestly garments—objects used in daily worship.

• Frame giving as an act of worship rather than a fundraiser.

• Supporting passages: Matthew 6:19–21; Hebrews 13:15–16.

Celebrate God’s provision publicly

Exodus 36:5: “The people are bringing more than enough...”

• Regular updates, testimonies, and thank-you moments reinforce faith and invite continued participation.

• Supporting passages: Psalm 9:1; Luke 17:18.

Highlight Christ’s generosity

2 Corinthians 8:9: “Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor…”

• Remind believers that giving mirrors the gospel itself—sacrificial, joyous, life-giving.

• Supporting passages: John 3:16; Ephesians 5:2.

Provide clear, accountable avenues to give

• Israel knew where to bring their offerings—Moses’ tent entrance.

• Modern application: transparent budgets, multiple secure methods, and visible stewardship teams.

• Supporting passages: 1 Corinthians 16:1–2; Romans 12:17.

Establish rhythms of generosity

• The Tabernacle project had a defined season, yet Israel also practiced regular tithes and offerings.

• Encourage both planned, systematic giving and spontaneous, Spirit-led gifts.

• Supporting passages: Malachi 3:10; Acts 4:34–35.

Pray for a culture of cheerful giving

• When leaders model, the vision is clear, hearts are stirred, worship is emphasized, and accountability is evident, a contagious culture of generosity grows—just as in Exodus 35:27.
