How to prevent pride daily?
In what ways can we guard against pride in our daily lives?

Setting the Scene—Acts 12:21

“On the appointed day, Herod donned his royal robes, sat on his throne, and addressed the people.”

Herod’s dazzling appearance and self-exalting speech set the stage for the crowd’s flattery and for God’s swift response (vv. 22-23). His downfall becomes a cautionary snapshot of unchecked pride.

Why Pride Is So Dangerous

• Pride steals glory that belongs to God alone (Isaiah 42:8).

• It blinds us to our dependence on the Lord (Deuteronomy 8:11-14).

• It invites God’s opposition: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)

• It precedes destruction (Proverbs 16:18).

Common Daily Indicators Pride Is Creeping In

• Feeling slighted when not praised.

• Talking more about achievements than about God’s grace.

• Resisting correction or accountability.

• Comparing ourselves to others to feel superior.

• Serving publicly for recognition rather than quietly for love.

Practical Steps to Guard Against Pride

• Start every day by verbally giving God the glory for life, breath, and any platform you hold (Psalm 115:1).

• Cultivate secret acts of service—do good “so that your giving may be in secret” (Matthew 6:4).

• Invite regular, honest feedback from a trusted believer (Proverbs 27:6).

• Memorize humility-forming verses like Philippians 2:3-5 and recite them in first person.

• Redirect praise: when complimented, thank the person and immediately acknowledge God’s enabling.

• Keep a gratitude journal, listing ways the Lord, not self-effort, brought each day’s successes.

• Confess pride promptly when the Spirit convicts (1 John 1:9).

• Delight in others’ victories; intentionally encourage and elevate them (Romans 12:10).

• Remember eternity—meditate on Revelation 4:10-11 where crowns are laid before the throne.

Scripture Reinforcement

1 Peter 5:5-6—“Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another.”

Micah 6:8—Walk humbly with God.

Luke 18:13-14—God exalts the humble tax collector, not the self-righteous Pharisee.

Jeremiah 9:23-24—Boast only in knowing the Lord.

Galatians 6:14—“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Living the Example of Christ

Jesus “emptied Himself… He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:7-8)

By fixing our eyes on His self-emptying love, we remember that any honor we receive is temporary, but His glory is eternal. Following Him, we guard against pride and live for the One who truly deserves all praise.
