How to ready hearts for Jesus' baptism?
In what ways can we prepare our hearts for Jesus' transformative baptism today?

Setting the Scene

“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but after me comes One more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” (Matthew 3:11)

John points beyond outward water to Christ’s inward, cleansing, empowering work. Preparing for that “baptism…with the Holy Spirit and with fire” means positioning our hearts for the transforming presence Jesus longs to pour out.

Recognizing Our Need

• Acknowledge that mere religious routine cannot change us (Isaiah 29:13).

• Confess the poverty of self-effort and our utter dependence on Christ (John 15:5).

• Believe His promise still stands: “Whoever believes in Me…‘rivers of living water will flow from within him.’ ” (John 7:38-39).

Repentance: Clearing the Debris

• Turn from known sin immediately—no delay (Proverbs 28:13).

• Invite the Spirit to search and expose hidden motives (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Embrace godly sorrow that leads to lasting change, not mere regret (2 Corinthians 7:10-11).

• Live in daily repentance, keeping accounts short with God (1 John 1:9).

Humility: Bowing Low for His Filling

• John saw himself unworthy to loosen Jesus’ sandals; adopt that posture (James 4:6).

• Renounce any claim to personal glory—“Not to us, LORD, not to us, but to Your name be the glory” (Psalm 115:1).

• Serve others quietly; humility invites the Spirit’s fire (Philippians 2:3-4).

Thirsting for the Spirit: Cultivating Holy Desire

• Fast from distractions that dull spiritual appetite (Matthew 6:16-18).

• Linger in Scripture; faith comes by hearing the Word (Romans 10:17).

• Pray with expectancy—“how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13).

• Sing and meditate on God’s greatness; worship stokes longing (Psalm 63:1-5).

Obedience: Walking in the Light

• Align choices with revealed truth; obedience unlocks deeper revelation (John 14:21).

• Practice immediate response to promptings—Philip and the Ethiopian (Acts 8:29-30).

• Guard purity in body and mind; the Spirit dwells in holy vessels (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).

Community: Opening Our Lives Together

• Gather with believers who pursue the Spirit’s fullness (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Confess sins to one another and pray for healing (James 5:16).

• Celebrate testimonies of transformation; they raise corporate faith (Revelation 12:11).

• Honor Spirit-given gifts in the body—each part benefits all (1 Corinthians 12:7).

Continual Surrender: Keeping the Flame Alive

• Present yourself daily as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2).

• “Fan into flame the gift of God” through disciplined use (2 Timothy 1:6).

• Stay teachable; quenching pride extinguishes fire (1 Thessalonians 5:19).

• Pray “Come, Lord,” anticipating fresh fillings until He returns (Ephesians 5:18).

Closing Encouragement

Jesus still baptizes “with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” As we clear the ground with repentance, bow low in humility, thirst earnestly, obey promptly, walk in community, and keep surrendering, the promised transforming power meets us—purifying, igniting, and sending us out ablaze for His glory.
