How can we recognize God's work today, as in Deuteronomy 29:3? Setting the Scene with Deuteronomy 29:3 “You saw with your own eyes those great signs and wonders.” (Deuteronomy 29:3) Israel’s experience was tangible, visible, unforgettable. God wants His people today to recognize His hand with the same clarity, though the contexts have changed. What Hasn’t Changed about God’s Work • He is still actively sustaining creation (John 5:17; Colossians 1:17). • His character and power remain constant: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) • His Word continues to interpret His deeds: “The word of the LORD is upright, and all His work is trustworthy.” (Psalm 33:4). Where to Look for God’s Signs and Wonders Today 1. The new creation of changed lives – Regeneration: hearts of stone turned to flesh (Ezekiel 36:26). – Ongoing fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace…” (Galatians 5:22-23). 2. Providence in everyday details – “He did good, giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons.” (Acts 14:17). – Timely provisions, open doors, closed doors, and protection that align with His promises (Romans 8:28). 3. The spread of the gospel – Conviction of sin and conversion through the preached Word (Romans 1:16). – Churches planted, missionaries sent, Scriptures translated—modern “signs and wonders” of grace. 4. Answers to prayer – Specific, Scripturally-grounded petitions met in unmistakable ways (1 John 5:14-15). 5. Occasional miraculous interventions – Healings, deliverances, and other extraordinary acts—still subject to biblical testing (Acts 3:16; 1 John 4:1). Biblical Filters for Discernment • Consistency with Scripture: God never contradicts His own Word (Isaiah 8:20). • Exaltation of Christ: the Spirit’s work always magnifies the Son (John 16:14). • Produces holiness: genuine works lead to obedience, not confusion (Titus 2:11-12). • Confirmed by reliable witnesses: “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.” (2 Corinthians 13:1). • Promotes love and unity among believers (John 13:35). Practical Ways to Stay Alert • Immerse in Scripture daily; familiarity with truth trains the senses (Hebrews 5:14). • Keep a journal of God’s provisions and answers; patterns emerge over time. • Share testimonies in the local church; corporate memory guards against forgetfulness (Psalm 78:4). • Practice thankful reflection at day’s end, naming specific evidences of His hand (1 Thessalonians 5:18). • Test impressions and experiences in community, under shepherd-leadership (Hebrews 13:17). Living in Expectation Just as Israel was accountable for what their “own eyes” saw, believers today are called to notice, remember, and proclaim the Lord’s ongoing wonders. Staying anchored in the written Word while watching for His living works turns ordinary days into continual invitations to worship. |
